Playoff confusion???

Featured Replies

Let me throw this question in the mix. A co-worker of mine lives in Somerset and his kids go to Southwestern. I, as you can tell, am from Rockcastle. Let's examine the games that these two teams play this coming weekend. Southwestern hosts Central. Central won the region and had a better district record. Yet the game is at Southwestern, which would imply the lower seed is getting home field. Rockcastle on the other hand finished second in the region behind Johnson Central, yet Johnson Central is getting home field.

Why is the lower seed getting home field in one region, but the higher seed is getting it in the other region? Does this have to do with the blind draw that several have made reference to?

Both Central and Southwestern are #1 seeds from their individual districts. Records don't mean as much as the seeds do.

The alternating districts idea is the worst I've heard. Regions should be based on geography.

Another fly in the ointment is Districts 1 & 2 will always be paired as will 7 & 8. The only districts that can flip are 3 - 6. At least that is the way I understand it.

I still don't rate it as worse than going to 6 classes, but it's a solid second. Calling these brackets regions rewrites the actual definition of the word.

The term "Region" could be misunderstood easily here.

It has nothing to do with a geographic "region" like it has implied in a way in the past. Regions are now switched up every year, so your team could win Region 1 this year and Region 3 next year.

Basically, region champ means you are a state semifinalist.

Then they should just be called quarterfinals instead of regional finals. That'd make things less confusing AND more accurate.

No, that's not exactly correct. Districts 1 and 2 can't draw 7 and 8, but they can draw anyone else. District 7, of Class A, plays the District 6 winner in 2007 and the District 5 winner in 2008. Districts 5 and 8 play next year in 3A and 4 A.

It is much, much too confusing. The regions should remain intact. You could win Region 2 one year and Region 4 the next.
