Smallhoops Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 As I suspect is the case in other parts of the state, the regions for the All A Classic are not the same as the regions for the KHSAA tournament. Thus, two teams from the KHSAA Seventh Region, Shawnee and Portland Christian, are squaring off tomorrow night in the semi-finals of the All A Classic Sixth Region tournament. That tournament actually kicks off tonight with a match-up between Evangel Christian and Beth Haven, the winner of which will play the host Holy Cross Crusaders tomorrow night in the other semi-final. The All A Classic Sixth and Seventh Regions are roughly divided on an east-west basis, and are generally consistent with the KHSAA Sixth and Seventh Regions that existed before the KHSAA realigned those regions around 2011. However, Portland Christian being in the All A Classic Sixth Region is a historic relic; while that made sense when Portland Christian was located on Portland Avenue in the Portland area of Louisville, Portland Christian is now located on Westport Road in eastern Jefferson County. The All A Classic Seventh Region tournament will be played next week. Whitefield Academy, which is in the KHSAA Sixth Region, is in the All A Classic Seventh Region.
theguru Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 Thanks for sharing all that @Smallhoops This is another important difference between a KHSAA sanctioned event and an independent tournament. The All A Classic has been really good for Kentucky High School Basketball but it is just another tournament with its own way of doing things and not a state championship of any sort. I know that irritates some of you but it is important to keep things in the proper perspective.
gchs_uk9 Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 I think only the 6th/7th and the 5th/12th Regions are affected by this modified alignment. After Monticello closed there were only three 12th Region schools eligible: Burgin, Danville, and Somerset. After holding a three-team tournament one year, Washington County was moved from the 5th into the 12th for the All "A." Now that Danville Christian is a provisional member of the KHSAA there are five teams competing in the All "A." It will be interesting to see if Washington County is moved back to the 5th. Added note: Kentucky School for the Deaf is located in the 12th Region and participated in the first regional tournament in 1990. They've since eschewed the event to participate in the annual Mason-Dixon Tournament contested among all of the deaf schools in the SEC footprint, the premier event for deaf student-athletes in this part of the country.
