November 19, 20187 yr My wife has been historically bad at backing a vehicle up. She can take a normal three point turn, and make it 11 or 12 points by the time it's all said and done. Anyway, on my new(er) F150 it came with a backup camera built in (it displays in the rearview mirror). Since then, she's been dropping some no-so-subtle hints about getting one for her vehicle. And with Christmas just around the corner, I figured it might be wise for Santa to look into one. I've read quite a few reviews, but sometimes it's hard to take them seriously (not knowing the person actually doing the review and whether they've got a connection to the company or not). So, does anyone on BGP have an aftermarket one that they've had installed? Any that are recommended? Any to stay away from?
November 19, 20187 yr Do you have an aftermarket radio that you'll be plugging into, or will the back up camera need its own screen?
November 19, 20187 yr Author Do you have an aftermarket radio that you'll be plugging into, or will the back up camera need its own screen? Good question. I should have stated that before. We will have to get a seperate screen to display the camera view. Her car has nothing built in, and if/when she needs directions, she just pulls up Waze on her phone...so there's no aftermarket GPS unit.
November 19, 20187 yr Boyo is a good brand. I'm sure they have some options with their own screens, or at least rear view mirrors with the screen built into them. You can spend a couple hundred dollars on one, or find very cheap options around $75.
November 19, 20187 yr I have an after market camera on my Tundra. Bought it in 2015 but didn't get around to installing it until last year. It was only $25.99 and works great although my only complaint is I had to mount it using my license plate screws so at night the lights for my license plate cause a pretty bad glare. It would work much better at night mounting it some where else. I have an aftermarket radio as well so it plugged right up. Really easy install job. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T2GX37A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
November 19, 20187 yr My business sells and installs backup cameras as well as many other electronic accessories. Rostra sells a replacement rear view mirror that has a monitor built in that is the size of the entire mirror. Some of the other brands just have a small 4.3" screen that is some what difficult to see. Depending on her vehicle there are several camera options some install like the OEM cameras and some attach to the license plate mount. Entry level units with cost you $100 or so, the nicer hard wired units will be around $500 to $600. I would stay away form the wireless units due to there herky-jerky picture quality. Hope this helps.
