Christian County 16 Hopkinsville 7

Featured Replies

Hopkinsville starts the season 1-3 after a lot of high hopes for this season. They have played a tough schedule, so we'll have to see if they can get it going like they did to end last year.

I thought they'd turned a corner with the win over Caldwell County. It appears that was premature.

Pretty sad turn of events for the Tigers. Their QB Jay Bland appears to be out for the seasons with a knee injury, as reported by the Kentucky New Era. He hurt in their first drive of the 2nd half and the game was pretty much over from there.

It was 8-7 CCHS at the half. Hoptown got the ball back after stopping the Colonels on 3 and out to start the half. Hoptown was driving down the field looking like they would score. Bland makes a diving play to make it a 3rd and short in CCHS territory, but then he came up limping combined with a personal foul that moved them back 15 yards. Hoptown has no backup QB. So, they end up punting. CCHS scores a quick touchdown. Bland tried to come out, but is hit and has to be helped off the field again and then was iced and his night was done in the 3rd quarter.

Hoptown then had tried different options at QB with receivers and running backs, but they could not throw. All they could do was run out of the wildcat the rest of the night because they could not throw it and there was no plan in place in case they lost Bland.

The game was pretty much over from there, because Hoptown knew they could not score and Christian knew they just needed to churn the clock down to end the game. Sad end to what was shaping up to be a very exciting game.

Though the Bland story is the story of the game, what should not get lost is the Christian County appears to have found their answer at QB in JLinn Powell. He made some good throws/decisions and added some new dimensions to the Colonel Offense. Though they are probably a 2nd round team at best in 5A, Powell's improvement can make them a big factor in their district going forward the rest of the year. CCHS has a lot to be excited about going forward.

I hate that for Bland and Hoptown both.

Do they really not have any backup quarterback? The KHSAA has a freshman, Jacob Dilday, listed as a quarterback. Just no luck with him? Or was he not an option for some reason?

I asked and I believe that he isn't an option at the moment. I was told he is being converted into a QB for Freshman ball and was not a QB until this summer.

Christian County didn’t seem to be threatened whatsoever in this gsme. Hoptown had -7 yds rushing in the first half with Bland on the field. Take away the remarkable catch by Ellis Dunn in the 1st qtr and I’m not sure they score at all. Hoptown never seemed to be able to get in a rhythm and when Bland went down it was over. I think the story that is getting lost in all this is, that after graduating all those seniors, this Colonel Defense is for real.

Yeah but that's hard to say what was going to happen. Hoptown was driving into CCHS territory when Bland went down and then basically played the rest of the game without a QB. Hard to say what was going to happen either way. CCHS just melted clock and stacked the box and the 2nd half was very bad.

Hoptown has talent, but without a QB and an offensive system I do not see them winning more than 2 maybe 3 games at best the rest of the way (PT, Madisonville, and Logan will all be losses and then they have Hop Central, Calloway, and Greenwood as possible wins)

Im looking forward to seeing CCHS matchup with Owensboro and Graves at home down the stretch. Should be some very good football at the stadium. Hopefully CCHS can get the #1 seed and get us some more playoff football down here. Always fun seeing how Coach Love gets his teams ready for the playoffs down the stretch. He hasn't gotten past the 2nd round in the last 7 years, maybe this year he can take an unexpected team past that hurdle that's alluded him since the Anthony Hickey team.
