McCracken County will host a 7on7 Tournament July 13 for "Small Schools" (10 Teams) and on July 14 will host a Varsity Tournament with 20 Teams and a JV Tournament with about 12 Teams.

 

Small School KY Schools participating include Crittenden County, Union County, Butler County,

Ballard County, Calloway County, Fort Campbell, and Todd County Central.

 

JV KY School competing include McCracken County, Owensboro, Christian County, Madisonville, Trigg County and Graves County.

 

Varsity KY Schools competing include McCracken County, Owensboro, Christian County, Bowling Green, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, Trigg County and Graves County. Several other Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and Indiana Schools also competing including Rochester, IL; Sacred-Heart Griffin, IL; Maine South, IL; Lutheran North, MO; and Althoff Catholic, IL.

 

Looks like a very good group of teams! And I don't mind it being 2 hours closer to home!

Went to a piece of the Small School Tournament tonight.

 

First it was really hot! Second, McCracken County has tremendous facilities. Very impressed. There is no way to know what the score is unless you pay implicit attention to the game. No score board or flip boards or anything. The referees keep the time on the field so occasionally you hear "X time remaining" called out.

With that said, it is good to see the football in the air again.

 

I watched Union County play Crittenden County, which I'm told Union won 13-12. Union County started poorly but played pretty well overall. No individuals really stood out. For Crittenden County, their QB played ok, but I really liked their 2 primary wideouts. They had size speed and elusiveness.

I watched Butler County take on a very athletic team out of Tennessee. I think Butler County will struggle this season.

 

It was hot enough to make me head home after just a few rounds of pool play.

I plan to head back tomorrow to watch BG and as many KY teams as I can. BG plays Madisonville first. I will report back later tomorrow.

Crittenden vs Union was a good game. Crittenden beat Union 19-17. Rockets advanced to beat Butler Co Ky, Spencer Co Indiana. Crittenden ended up in the semi final game vs Memphis Kirby resulting in a loss for the Rockets.

Saw one of the refs a few hours ago that said not many games were in until the rest of the tournament was cancelled due to the heat. Very unfortunate due to a lot of travel for some of the teams.

We were at the tourney when they pulled the plug due to the heat index. I have no problem with the rule but I feel it could have been avoided

 

Alter the times or just cancel the tourney BEFORE teams and fans made the journey. The forecast could have been seen by the ones in charge of the tourney

The Good: I saw Graves County battle Hopkinsville at 9 this morning in a very entertaining game. Both quarterbacks looked good but both threw some picks. July football is not November football. They both have some nice looking playmakers on the outside and I think both will have good seasons.

I then watched BG play Madisonville. I though the Maroons played hard and although I wasn't overly impressed with their QB he made the average plays. They have a couple good looking receivers/backs.

BG looked good on 2 offensive possessions and not good on 1 or 2. They have some tall receivers who should contribute this season. On defense you could tell there were still some rusty spots by not breaking on the ball, but they did make some plays when they needed to. So it was positive. As all your really looking for in 7on7 is timing, chemistry and situational experience which are all good.

 

The Bad:

The games were called at 10:15 local time due to the heat index. And it was hot. So BGs pool only got in 1 game. The Hoptown/Graves pool got in 1.5 games. And that was it.

 

First, although I did not know they were going to use the Heat Index Rule for 7v7, I FULLY support all rules that ensure player safety. Second, Mother Nature in July is out of anyones hands. And I don't blame the heat on them.

 

The Ugly:

There were teams from Chicago, Memphis, BG to St Louis there and there was a LOT of time, energy and expense to get there. With that said, EVERYONE knew what the forecast was at least a week out. It never wavered. And as I applaud the organizers fortitude to come out on the field and basically cancel the tournament after 1.5 games for player safety, I can not get it out of my head on the 4 hour drive home that a contingency schedule should have been available and on Tuesday of last week every coach should have been called and informed that they would be going to the alternate schedule.

 

What would be that alternate schedule you ask? They had it scheduled for the pools to take 3 hours 9 am to 12 noon to complete the pools. So on Friday afternoon, teams meet at 6pm (when the small school tourney began 1.5 hours behind schedule) and play their pool games.

They show back up this morning for tournament games starting at 7 am and you are done at 10 giving everyone plenty of time to drive home. You can gaurentee at least 5 games to every team and most will get 6 games and will be outside of the Heat Index. Push the Small Schools to tonight at 6! Easy to play armchair QB, but this heat was predicted. I'll leave it at that.

I give credit to the chairman of the McCracken County 7on7 guy. He sent a very sincere private message to me explaining the effort that was made to communicate with coaches a few days ago, warning them about index.

 

I love his idea of next year having varsity portion of 7on7 pool play on Friday evening with playoff bracket on Saturday morning.

 

I know a lot of blood, sweat (lots of sweat!) and tears goes into this tourney. My only suggestion is don’t leave it up to the coaches to decide. Look at forecast a few days before and if heat index is questionable, pull the plug

You're missing it. Teams that come from a distance have to stay the night. The Chicago Team stayed at the hotel we stayed at. They could have played that night, which is what I'm suggesting and get up the next morning and play the tournament games and then go home just as planned. Not sure what you mean by twice.

Further more you want the teams that traveled for 4 plus to then get off a bus, go play pool rounds, get back to hotel around 11pm eat, shower, bed, then be up at 4am to be at the school by 6am for bracket rounds.
