The kid from St. Henry, Michael Schaefer, epitomizes the position. Here is a quick offensive stat line:

On the other side of the ball:

Pop-time ~1.9, SB-ATT 32-47, CS 15, PIK 5

 

Lead-off hitter from the left, has the arm talent of a D1 catcher, and 3-yr varsity starter.

 

Only comparison I've seen behind the plate is Ben Metzinger from Trinity.

Sounds like i may need to change my schedule around. I am supposed to be Nashville to watch a player. Sounds like i need to be the nky area or get a colleague to go there . Where can i find a schedule. Ive recently been assigned the midwest area which goes from Tn -Oh - Neb- ky and Missouri, Kansas . So trying to get a foundation of areas. After 25 plus years of being out west and in the south and working on word of mouth to travel to small hotbeds it's beneficial to talk to the people who see players regularly. Not showcase talent that prepare you to be looked at but actually sitting in the stands ,hearing it, and seeing it live . That's how you can tell who has it fundamentally and mentally.

Justin Schlarman caught both games vs Highlands this year and I’m pretty sure he was the starting catcher last year. If my memory serves me right, Cooper subbed in a catcher late in the game at Dixie.

 

Yes, Schlarman is the #2 catcher and did a number of the non-district games. He is good but Austin appears faster on the pop and is better at not letting pitches get by. Likely Austin will be starting at regionals on Monday so people will be able to compare to others.

The nice thing about the 9th region tournament on Monday is you get all four first-round games in one day.
