Stats Question: Raceland vs. East Carter (5-8-18)

How does a team get 3 hits and 2 Runs in one inning and not be credited with one single earned run?

Error, out, out, hit, hit, hit...all runs unearned.

And this isn't the only way. There are a ton of different combination that could result in 3 hits and two unearned runs. Too many to list.

I wish I had a high school team with Fouts pitching. I'd take her and it would be a showcase of nothing but top 25 teams all year. That would get the rest of the team ready come tournament time.:thumb:

Unfortunately it's full of a lot of cupcakes.

I heard that the error was questionable.

Forgot the hit at the beginning but the HOME scorekeeper called it an error. Everyone else says hit.

I agree... I don't know if it's a logistics problem or what. This team should be playing a stronger schedule. I know she's the type pitcher a coach only gets once. My post was meant as what I would do. I didn't mean to call her coach out on his scheduling.

I see why this is being debated. Saw in USA today Fouts is credited with about 123 innings and has a 0.00 era. Guessing Raceland feels they put the first earned run on her and maybe East Carter is attempting to protect it with a questionable error call. Would this be an accurate guess? I know a lot of teams in softball when they have a stud pitcher you see some iffy scoring decisions to protect the stud pitcher.

You'd be right on. I've watched several of their games last year and runs that should have been earned were scored unearned. The error in question was when Fouts went to field a hit. Fouts stretched out to field the ball and it "tipped" her glove. I guess scorekeepers assume that when a ball touches the glove and wasn't fielded, it's automatically an error, well at least in the eyes of the East Carter scorekeeper. So all of those remarkable diving attempts that carom off of gloves should be changed from hits to errors.
