Should be interference with fair catch and team B should take possession 15 yards ahead of the spot of the infraction. Exception would be if team A player was pushed or blocked into team B receiver by another player from team B

Should be a penalty on the kicking team for interference and the recieving team will keep the ball.

Both Comet and Sportsfan are correct. However, if the call in question was the one in the Southwestern/Russell Co. game the other night the ruling was a rekick. This occurred because there was an inadvertant whistle before the foul was committed and made the rest of the play a moot point. On ANY inadvertant whistle the down is replayed. :thumb:

Comet, however, is wrong in his enforcment. In high school, if kick catching interference is called, the receiving team has three choices...

 

1. a 15 yard penalty from the line of scrimmage (the previous spot) and replay the down

 

2. taking the ball with what's called an awarded fair catch the spot of the foul

 

or

 

3. declining the penalty and accepting the results of the play.

 

The option they DO NOT EVER have is 15 yards from the spot of the foul and keeping the ball. That's only in college and professional football, but it's never in high school.

That is the call in question and if it was an inadvertant whistle then why was Russell Co penalized 10 yards from previous spot then the rekick?

I know this doesn't have anything to do with your play, but the "ANY inadvertant whistle the down is replayed." is incorrect. It is replayed ALWAYS when it occurs on a loose ball play. When the ball is in player possession, the team last in possession has the choice of the results of the play OR replay. For example, a kid has gained 40 yards and then there is an inadvertent whistle, you certainly want them to have the option to keep that play's results.

That's probably the biggest misconception. They are not supposed to let up on the whistle, or play until the whistle. That is not the rule. They are supposed to stop when the play is dead by rule. If the whistle is late, it is still all player's obligation (offense and defense) to know when the forward progress is stopped, the ball is released, the play is over, etc. and stop play. Officials are actually properly instructed to be a bit slow with the whistle to prevent inadvertent whistles, etc.

But...what I said still holds true. IMO, making ALL players "responsible for knowing when the play is dead by rule" (whether behind, across the field, or wayyy in front) is pretty abstract for a physical sport. And IMO, is asking too much of the players.

 

Sooner or later a player is going to be hurt BADLY because he let his guard down when he thinks the play "ended" (before a blown whistle). It's a bad, BAD rule IMO !!

 

It would be MUCH simpler, safer, and easier for the players, coaches, and officials if the whistle blow designated the official end of a play.
