Ring appraisal

Featured Replies

I know the feeling. I bought a rather expensive piece of jewelry in Hong Kong one time. It was a pearl in a setting with some diamonds. I took it with me to a jewelry store I frequent and asked what they thought. Their pearl expert was not there, but they told me the diamonds and setting was worth more than what I had paid. Probably need to get it a real appraisal.

Do many of you have an insurance over ride on your Jewerly? Most homeowners policies only cover a certain amount. Same with guns.

I have Jewlery insurance on the engagement ring. It’s not very expensive I think it was something like $40 a year. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Update--first appraisal took one day to come back. The second one took three weeks. When I went to pick the ring and appraisal up from the second jeweler they had taken all the diamonds and one sapphire out?? I immediately took it back to Herzog and they were stunned. Apparently the prongs are damaged.

So I took Herzogs appraisal, along with Richters, and the ring and removed stones to the owner. I explained the situation and how unhappy I was that the appraisal came back at $500 and that they removed stones and it took three weeks to get it back. He said he felt the appraisal seemed low and he would adjust it to $1,000!? He said he would put the ring back together but it take til Monday or Tuesday. He was going to check to see why it took three weeks and why the stones were removed.

When I pick it up next week I am going to take it back to Herzogs and have them look at it. Hereof has been extremely kind and helpful!! They are top notch

I'll update on this when I have the ring back. Thanks

Did you happen to look at the serial number on the diamond before giving it to them? Does it have one?

I did not even know there were serial numbers lol

Started back in the 1980s. Only diamonds that have been appraised by the Gemological Institute of America....so when you here commercials that refer to "GIA Certified dealer", that's partially what they're talking about. Diamonds that are older than the laser engraving process (which is used to put the serial number on the diamond) don't all have a serial number, but older diamonds can be taken to a GIA certified appraiser and have a serial number given to them.

I picked the ring up today and it was put back together and cleaned. They gave me another appraisal for fair market value of $1,500. I took it to Herzog to make sure it was put back together right and it was. Both jewelers agree on the fair market value. Sent Herzog flowers for going above and beyond. Whew!
