The 3rd region is starting to become a 1 horse race. The Owensboro Red Devils have emerged now as the overwhelming favorite to rep the 3rd at Rupp Arena. Not only are they winning region games, they are blowing teams out. With the way they play, it would be hard to foresee them being upset in an elimination game. Its time to start looking at the Devils in the state polls.

 

1.Owensboro Red Devils (14-4) – SAME – The Devils continued to show their dominance inside the region with a 82-65 win at Daviess County on Saturday. The game was never in doubt. OHS was led by Cory Gardner's 27. They put 3 other players in double figures. Deonte Douglas had 23, Lance Lewis had 13 and Jeron Tinsley had 12. The Devils host Madisonville tonight before heading to Evansville, Indiana with a huge showdown with #1 in class 3A, Evansville Bosse on Friday.

 

2.Daviess County Panthers (13-7) – SAME – The Panthers split a pair of games this week, first losing at home to district rival Owensboro on Saturday, 82-65. The Panthers were only able to have 2 practices in a week prior to the big matchup due to school systems policy on weather. Last night, they bounced back with a big 75-38 win over Hancock County. Daviess County hosts Henderson tonight, before traveling to John Hardin on Saturday to take on Central Hardin on Saturday.

 

3.Owensboro Catholic Aces (13-6) - SAME – Since losing to OHS back on January 5th, the Aces have reeled off 6 straight wins. 3 of those wins came in the All-A tournament where the Aces won the regional title on Sunday 52-36 over Edmonson County. JD Marshall led the team with 13 points and 7 boards. They knocked of Hancock County in the semi finals on Saturday, 57-39. Ty Vincent had 13 points, 9 rebounds in the win. Friday night, the Aces got their 3rd win of the season over Apollo, 61-58. Luke Hayden had one of his best games of the season, leading Catholic with 16. The Aces kickoff All-A state tournament play on Thursday vs Knott Central.

 

4.Meade County Greenwave (9-4) – SAME – Meade County faced a week of cancelations and did not play a game this past week. They play their first game in 2 weeks tonight at home against Louisville Valley. With only 13 games under their belt, they have only played about half as many games as everyone else in the region. On Friday, they host Breck County for a big game in the 11th district.

 

5.Muhlenberg County Mustangs (9-9) – SAME – The Mustangs continue to rise, as they have won 3 of their last 4. Muhlenberg won their lone game this past week, 61-53 over Ohio County. The win all but locks up the #1 seed in the district, meaning a bye into the 3rd region tournament. In the win Alex Van Hook led all scorers with 20 points. He also had 9 boards. The Stangs will be battle tested this week as they host Bowling Green tonight before traveling to Apollo on Friday.

 

6.Apollo Eagles (7-10) – SAME – Apollo is starting to turn things around, winning 3 of their last 4 games. Back on Friday night, the Eagles dropped a 61-58 district game to Owensboro Catholic. Apollo was playing with a disadvantage of having very limited practice time due to the weather. Saturday, they bounced back with a nice win over Evansville Central, 62-58. Hayden Shelton led all scorers with 22. Last night, they got a 77-43 road win at Mclean County. Nathan Boyle and Shelton led the way with 22 each. The Eagles host Muhlenberg County on Friday.

 

7.Breckenridge County Tigers (10-6) – SAME – The Fighting Tigers havent played a game in 12 days due to weather. They get back in action tonight, hosting Grayson County. On Friday they travel to Meade for a big 11th district game.

 

8.Ohio County Eagles (8-9) – SAME - Ohio County saw its 3 game win streak snapped on Friday, with a district loss at Muhlenberg County. The loss means the Eagles will now have to play a 1st round elimination game against Mclean County. Last night, they dropped a 84-43 decision to Hoptown. They have a pair of road games to round out the week at South Warren on Friday and Henderson on Saturday.

 

9.Whitesville Trinity Raiders (11-10) - SAME - The Raiders didnt get any games in, this week, due to the weather. They return to action with a pair of road games this week, Thursday at Mclean and Friday at Grayson.

 

10.Grayson County Cougars (8-11) – UP 1 – The Cougars split a pair of games this past weekend. On Friday, they got a nice district win over Butler County 56-41. Caleb Ray had 22 in the win, while Bailey Logsdon chipped in 16. On Saturday, they lost to Fairdale, 64-48. They travel to Breck County tonight before hosting a big district matchup against Whitesville Trinity.

 

11.Hancock County Hornets (9-9) – DOWN 1 – The Hornets have been on the wrong some of some lopsided games lately, losing 3 straight by an average margin of 30 points per game. Last night, Daviess County smacked the Hornets 75-38. On Saturday, Catholic eliminated Hancock from All-A action, 57-39. Hancock will try to get back on the right track this week with games Friday and Saturday against Cloverport and Mclean.

 

12.Butler County Bears (7-9) – SAME – The Bears split a pair of games this week, first losing to Grayson County 56-41 on Friday. They bounced back with a 92-45 win over Cloverport last night. Butler hosts Caverna tonight and Edmonson County on Friday.

 

13.Edmonson County Wildcats (5-15) – SAME – The Cats had a nice showing in the All-A tournament, making a run to the championship game before falling to Catholic 52-36. Saturday they picked up a 66-36 win over Cloverport. Nick Clemmons had 12. They host Metcalf County tonight before traveling to Butler County on Friday.

 

14.Mclean County Cougars (5-11) – SAME – The Cougars have hit a mid season skid, losing 5 straight. Last night, they were blown out by Apollo 77-43. They will try to get back on track with a pair of home games this week. On Thursday, they host Trinity. Saturday, Hancock comes to town.

 

15.Cloverport Aces (2-15) – SAME – The Aces dropped a pair of regional games last week. 66-36 to Edmonson on Saturday and 92-45 to Butler County last night. They travel to Bethlehem tonight before traveling to Butler County Friday.

 

GAMES TO WATCH THIS WEEK

TUE - Madisonville at OHS - The #1 team in the region gets a test from a solid 2nd region squad. Henderson at Daviess County - Even though the Colonels are down a bit this year, this is an interesting matchup at DC.

 

THUR - Knott Central vs Owensboro Catholic - All-A State Tournament

 

FRI - Muhlenberg at Apollo - this should be a good middle of the pack measuring stick game for both teams. Breck Co at Meade Co - big 11th district matchup. Breck needs a road win to keep their hopes for a district 1 seed alive. Meade clinches with a win. Owensboro at Evansville Bosse - great test for the Devils as they travel to Evansville to take on the #1 team in Indiana class 3A. The Bulldogs are 13-2 and played #2 Scott County tough, losing 89-77.

I'm very interested in the 12th, from a balanced, competitive standpoint. Right now, I couldn't pick which two teams would come out of that district. I think the 11th is going to probably have an interesting Hancock-Breck matchup in the first round.

 

The region as a whole is drastically down from last year. In 2017, i felt the 3rd as a whole, was a strong as it's been in several years. This year, it's flat bad. That is all the more reason to make me believe if OHS makes it out of the first round of district, the Devils will go to Rupp. But as we've seen broadcasting the games on Homers Radio, there are no absolutes in the post season.

That's exactly right. Madisonville will provide OHS with a very tough test tonight. Maroons go 6-9 and 6-6 and that kind of size is trouble for anyone.

Just an observation: the Catholic / Apollo game last Friday. How was Apollo at a disadvantage in practice time due to the weather?? Catholic was out of school the exact amount of days, as was, County and OHS...... just sayin'....

Matthews scored 33 tonight for Meade against Valley. That's his 3rd straight game over 30. Furthermore, he did it against Curt Lewis, a top c/o 2018 recruit. Lewis simply could not guard him. Right now, no one can convince me that Matthews is not the most explosive player in the region. At 6'5", he's handling the ball against pressure, knocking down tons of outside shots (four more 3's tonight I think) and absolutely no one can stay in front of him. He can get to the basket just about any time he wants. More importantly he's doing this against some top players and teams (John Hardin, Doss, Valley).

 

Meade lost a tough one tonight. Looked like they had the game under control until late in the 3rd when Valley's pressure wore them down. Although this was a loss in the books, I see where this team can find a way to put something together.

Great game on both sides. Madisonville has a very good team. But it became obvious early on that there was no way they were going to be able to play with Owensboro running up and down the court. When Madisonville's big man (#50) posted up, he killed OHS inside. But he couldn't get out and run with them. Madisonville's guards were just not as athletic.

 

They had Owensboro out of sync in the 3rd quarter. Play got a bit chippy, then on a hard foul, both teams came together and words were exchanged. After that, play got more physical than it had been all night. Looked as though Owensboro was going to fold. They went for a period of time when they couldn't score and turned the ball over numerous times. Madisonville got within in 4, but couldn't get any closer. Owensboro got back on track and went back to their game.

 

Physicality is not Owensboro's strong suit, they are not big. So far they have gotten around that by a level of quickness not many teams are used to. The test, IMO, is going to be when they come up against a big, fast and quick team that plays OHS's game. That game will be very interesting.

 

I don't know, so I am asking, is Bosse bigger than OHS? It should be a very good game. I am really forward to it.
