Congrats Mustangs. I'm sure glad I went to the game and didn't rely on Footstomp to keep us posted. He's still my BFF.

A pair of Mustangs established two school records in our 30-16 win over Newport at Campbell County High School on "Local Heroes Night".

 

Senior Bryce Donnelly now possesses the school record for most receiving yards in a career, and has tied the record for most touchdowns scored in a career.

 

Junior Bryan Duffy set a single season record for most field-goals kicked in a season.

 

In what was an ask and answer first half, Brossart struck first on a 4 yard touchdown run by Mason Dennis to take a 6-0 lead when the PAT attempt missed.

Newport answered early in the second quarter on a series of passes, culminated by a 15 yard pass play from Sophomore Quarterback Giaunte Jackson to William Beamon. The Cats were successful on their 2-point conversion and the visitors led 8-6. Brossart missed a golden opportunity, fumbling the ball when crossing the goal line, when the ball went out of bounds, which is ruled a touchback, and the Mustangs came up empty. Newport was benevolent on the next play from their own 20 yard line, recovered by the Mustangs and setting up a quaterback sneak for the Brossart score with merely 19 seconds to play in the half. The PAT was good and the Mustangs took a 12-8 lead to the locker room at the half.

 

Brossart got a bit of separation early in the third quarter as Tyler MacDonald found Bryce Donnelly on a 72 yard touchdown pass, and two point conversion, giving the home team a 20-8 bulge.

 

Newport closed the gap with 10:49 to play in the game, as Jackson the quarterback ran into the endzone for a 4 yard touchdown completing a 70 yard drive. The 2-point conversion was good and we had a ballgame with Newport trailing by only four points at 20-16.

 

The rest of the scoring would be done by the Mustangs, a 65 yard pass play from MacDonald to Donnelly increased the lead to 27-16 with the successful PAT.

 

Newport failed to mount a serious threat the rest of the way, and Bryan Duffy added a 3-point field goal to wrap up scoring at 30-16 as Brossart improved to 3-1 heading into their bye week. Newport falls to 1-2.

Entertaining game to say the least. Newport was in this game until the 4th Q and looked to be a good matchup for the Mustangs.

 

Derek McCormick went down in the 1st with an ankle injury of some sort. Hope he recovers quickly from whatever it was!

 

That Bezold kid is a beast on offense and defense!
