Because Quintana will be under contract for 3 more years afte this season, saving the Cubs a lot of money on 1 less free agent pitcher, such as re-signing Arrieta, who is eligible for free agency after this year.

July 17, 20179 yr It's certainly a risk to give up 2 of your best prospects, but you gotta give up something to get something. And at the end of the day, they're prospects in high A. They're a couple of years away. The Cubs are in a 4-5 year window right now with the only big contracts on the books after this year are Heyward and Lester. When all the young guys become eligible for more $ in 2020-2022, the Cubs will have their own TV network so the money will be there then. I'm excited to see what free agent pitcher we get this winter.

July 17, 20179 yr Heyward deal is one they regret. Maybe, but he's still young and plenty of time to turn it around. He was trending back up but he cut his hand going for a foul ball. His hit velocity was way up with his new swing. Last year he was awful but he's much better this year.
