Mustangs upset NCC 6-5 in the 9th/10th Region Sectional Playoff between the two regional champions.

 

Were this a horse race they would double-check our lip tattoo and make us pee in the bottle for further analysis. The 12-7 Breds had defeated our now 8-9 Mustangs 11-1 earlier this season and had seen the Mustangs lose sizeably to both St. Henry and Scott in recent days and had to be considered huge favorites to punch their ticket to the "A" State Tournament on May 6th and 7th at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington. The Breds had defeated Beechwood to win the 9th Region "A" Title.

 

Not to be however, as Junior Zach Hamberg, the Mustang starter was rested and well prepared and Senior Chase Keller who was the closer had been saved for this game as well. Mustang hitters did their part as the Mustangs plated 3 in the 3rd, and 1 each in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings. NewCath countered with one each in the 4th, 5th, two in the 6th and another one in the 7th.

 

This is a nice win for Coach Ron Verst's Mustangs who hadn't competed in the "A" State Tournament since 2011 when we ran second behind Christian Academy of Louisville, and haven't been to Whitaker Bank Park since 2012 when we played into the KHSAA "Sweet Sixteen" State Tournament Final Four.

 

The Mustangs will take on the winner of Caldwell County and Carlisle County, secheduled to be played on Thursday as well.

Ran into some folks last night who were at the game. Said it was a dandy of a game. Both teams seizing their opportunities when they could.

Than it got really entertaining- Bases juiced with one out in the bottom of the 7th. Brossart up 6-4. NCC scores one run on a blown force play to pull within 1. Next play a kid is forced out at home. Chase Keller strikes out the final batter for the W.
