You do realize that if local school districts do not comply with federal "standards," then they risk losing funding. The funding is not the issue - the issue is the strings attached to that funding. I hope to live long enough to see the Supreme Court begin striking down the unconstitutional control that the federal government exerts over American citizens that was explicitly reserved for the states under the 10th Amendment.

There should be no federal funding of public schools and funding should not be used by the federal government to impose its will on local school districts. Schools should be governed at the state and local level exclusively. If the federal government or any American citizen with standing believes that schools are not being operated in accordance with the U.S. Constitution, then that is why our federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court exist.

So if a state sponsored school in California wants to teach Sharia law and California is ok with it...everybody else is too?

Seems to be a popular opinion right now. Ideologically I'm for it. But I haven't really put much thought into the practicalities of it. I will say, I do have one major hesitation. What exactly would certain localities teach if left to their own devices? Haven't sorted out in my head how all that would work.

But considering how many folks on BGP care about safe spaces and play dough and white privilege classes, I can't imagine they wouldn't want the fed to have a hand in regulating what is being taught to our youth.

I think one of the biggest differences between liberals and conservatives is the tendency of liberals to trust people in Washington to make decisions affecting their communities more than they trust their neighbors. Instead of trusting that most communities, given the power to make important decisions affecting their local schools, would do a better job than federal bureaucrats, they fret over those that might do a worse job.

 

The educational system that we have in place is failing miserably in many areas of the country. It is time to return the keys to the states and let them drive again. Sure, there will be a few wrecks, but the landscape is already littered with wrecks. Just maybe, given a little more authority, states can pull a few schools out of the ditch.

Great question. The same could be asked why somebody in Washington, DC, cares about what a school in Kentucky teaches. The Department of Education certainly does not care as much as Kentucky schools as those running for local boards of education seats, voting for those who run for seats, and parents who have students enrolled in Kentucky schools.
