Some schools start as early as the second week in August. So no you don't have three weeks. It get the idea but it's not feasible I'm my humble opinion. What would end up happening is you would lose the week 0 and week one games or you'd have to push the start day back causing games to be played later in DEC. Then that dreaded fall break/bye week gets really tricky as well. I'd like to see the other states that you've mentioned average school start date vs. Kentucky. Because when School used to start towards the later part of August early September, I'd be on par with this suggestion

The Season starts way too early as it is. And what benefit would playing two extra games provide and starting the season that early provide?? No reason to start practice before August 1st, no reason to play before labor day. Cut a week off the playoffs, get rid of the bye. Solves the problem everybody has with nearly everyone making the playoffs, gives families July back for vacation, and still ends the season at the same time.

I hear ya! I've been trying to squeeze vacations in during the dead period for the last 10 years.

Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey start football the second week of August (10th last year) School starts last week of August (roughly). Seasons end either the same week as Ky or a week after.

 

I just don't see where the date that school starts is that big of a deal.

 

There are several school districts that start the last week of July. School start date is a bigger deal than you think it is.

Ok. As it is right now. You can't put a helmet on until July 10. Can't do any thing contact wise including bags until July 22. Can't scrimmage until after August 1st. So you take away July and the first game will be when? And if your School starts Aug 9 with the Khsaa rules you won't have enough days before school starts to even have a camp. Unless you consider helmet only practices substantial enough to properly teach blocking and tackling. Now school starts Aug 30 that would give the time needed. That's why the date matters.

Kentucky's rules about heat and acclimation do make it difficult to start any later than we do. Again though, there are many states that are less restrictive, have shorter preseasons and are still very good football states that produce a lot of high level players.
