Unfortunately, Mrs. Lawnboy and 3.0 had had enough hoops by halftime of the varsity game so I had to leave......two and a half games was their limit. :lol2:

Saturday night's Newport Central Catholic girls' basketball season opener against visiting Cooper featured teams expecting vastly different scoring dynamics.

 

The Jaguars have one of the area's best 1-2 combinations in all-area performer Lexi Held, a hot college recruit, and talented sidekick Hailey Anderson, plus others with solid scoring experience.

 

NewCath lost its leading point producer from a team that had difficulty putting the ball in the basket with consistency last season and is looking to fill the scoring void.

 

Enter junior do-it-all Lexy Breen, a dynamic all-around athlete who may be hitting her stride on the hardwood.

 

Playing with renewed confidence, Breen scored every possible way while helping her teammates get buckets en route to a career-high 25 points, fueling a 55-49 win over pesky Cooper.

 

"This is a big day for her. She did a great job, especially with our point guard, Olivia Schalk, going out after getting hurt early in the game," NewCath coach George Stoll said of Breen. Schalk is day-to-day with a knee ligament strain. "I think that's what impressed me most was that we hung together through a lot of adversity in our first game of the season."

 

Breen's previous career-high was 20 points as a freshman. She had 16 in the second half against the Jaguars, who had 15 points at halftime.

 

"I didn't even know I had that many tonight. My adrenaline was running so high," said Breen a three-sport standout. She also plays volleyball and softball. "I thought everybody for us stepped up after (Schalk) was out."

 

The Jaguars, 0-2 and ranked ninth in The Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, have not won at 10th-ranked NewCath (1-0) since Cooper opened in 2008. Breen helped the Thoroughbreds keep it that way while avenging last season's first-ever loss to the Jaguars with three 3-point baskets, acrobatic drives to the hoop, back-door lay-ins and speedy buckets in transition.

 

She also flashed some deft passing that netted points for post player Asia Rice, who totaled 10, and hustling Kara Zimmerman, who scored eight while being NewCath's early spark.

 

It was a version of Breen unseen until Saturday.

 

"Last year, I was terrified to take it to the basket. I was terrified to make a turnover," Breen said. "This year, I have more opportunities and I want to take them."

 

That'll be fine with the Thoroughbreds, who need someone to shoulder a bigger scoring load.

 

"Lexy took a big step up," said teammate Jalyn Vogt, who finished with six points. "She knocked down shots. She made passes. She played well on offense and defense."

 

NewCath led by as many as 10 early in the second half. When Cooper drew to within four in the third quarter, Breen hit a trey just before the buzzer. When the Jags got back to within five in the fourth, Breen nailed another 3.

 

Cooper whittled it to two at 48-46 with 4:01 to play. Breen answered with an off-balance shot off the glass. Moments after the Jags cut it to four, Breen found the back door with a baseline bucket. She also hit critical free-throws down the stretch to keep the rallying Jags at arm's length.

 

Held (14 points) and Anderson (10) combined for 24 points for the Jaguars, a 51-41 home winner last season against the 'Breds. This is the third straight season NewCath has opened against Cooper.

 

"Obviously, this is our second game of the season," Cooper coach Nicole Levandusky said. "I think the big takeaway for us is our effort was night and day after the first game (a 28-point loss to Campbell County)."

A little surprised by this but not too surprised. Both teams are in that 4-8 range for the ninth. Credit the NCC coaches here. They are getting it done with limited resources.
