In my opinion, there was contact made and the call could've went either way. It looked to me as if Snow went down rather easily but it wasn't without a kick to the leg, with no contact being made on the ball by the defender. But either way, St Henry was awarded a PK late in the game that to me was also just as questionable. The ball was served into the box with pace and hit a defender who was only a few yards away from the ball when it was kicked giving him no time to react. The call was a handball inside the box although it looked to me as if his hand was inside his body and he may not have even been in the box. To me, these two PKs awarded to either team give one side no right to argue against the other as they were both questionable and each resulted in a goal leaving the two goals to basically cancel each other out in the end. I don't think the problem for St Henry was an unfair penalty awarded 15 minutes into the game, but rather giving up two goals in the last 7 minutes and blowing a 3-1 lead.

From a unbiased fan of HS soccer reading this back and forth, I gather from reading comments from a Cooper fan and some St Henry fans, the in question PK foul against ASnow, IMO (only from reading about it on BGP) was a good call. YC seems to know the game well and his description makes it clear the situation occurred WELL inside the box. The St Henry supporters made it sound as though it was at or near the top edge of the box.

 

I'm still curious to know if this was a fair result. A St Henry supporter has indicated the center ref made have had an influence on the outcome. My point of St Henry allowing the equalizing goal in the last 23 seconds had the biggest impact on the final result. If you want to win the game, don't allow the ball to go into the back of your net in the final 23 seconds.

The SH coach and the Cooper coach seemed quite content with the officiating. I didn't hear a peep from either of them on either PK. So perhaps their vantage point on the field was better than ours... usually if a BS pk is awarded you'll hear about it from the coaches.

From my view, Snow took a couple steps and then "fell down". Kunstek was already on the ground because of Snow (because they were both playing for the ball). It was a very questionable call from the referee.

Why would Snow just fall down? There is now no one guarding him and he is within 12-15 yds of the goal and if he takes another step... the ball is now on his left foot.... but he chooses to fall down(flop)?

Ok--why not? From my vantage point, the first PK awarded to Snow came out of nowhere. Snow was turned the other direction and running out of the box to go for the ball. He stumbled and fell just inside the box and a PK was awarded.

 

What does any of this have to do with the official doing both the NCC game and this one? If you are referring to him awarding a pk to NCC late in that game being similar to what happend last night then I would be inclined to agree with his call last night. He got it correct in the NCC game so events of last night must be more in line with the description provided by yellow card.

I agree with your definition but don't believe there was a conscious decision made to go that route.

 

IMO... Having the ball that close to the goal and the only defender within 15 feet is on the ground is a much better scoring opportunity than taking a dive and HOPING the ref awards a PK.

That's why i think he may have over exaggerated the fall. Here is a rules question. I have been to games where a ref will call a foul in the box and only reward a free kick not a PK. What is the difference in contact in those cases verses the ones that are given PK's. This is a serious question because when i see that I'm confused.

If it is a Direct Free Kick foul in the box then you get a PK. If it is an indirect free kick foul in the box it is just an indirect free kick.

Z89, "10-15 players" between the goal and Snow seems like a little much. From what I saw Snow had just beaten the back line and crossed to two cooper players, the only people that far back when he regained possession was the two cooper players and the back four of St Henry (one of which was out of the play due to the tackle he just made on Snow). He was only about 10 yards out from the goal and turning on his left foot, in my opinion, no reason for him to "flop" in this situation.

 

To your question, the only case that I can think of in which a free kick would be called in the box and a PK not given is when their is obstruction by a defensive player on the ball. This is an indirect free kick when awarded by the ref, thus not a PK when given in the box.

There are lists of certain violations that are direct kicks, and a list of others which are indirect. I believe there are 10 direct ones and they are most of the fouls involving contact, no matter how slight.

Have you ever seen ASnow play before? Saying its "hard for him to score", especially against St Henry (see last yrs Regional contest) or maybe talk with Campbell Co HS fans. These two previous games from the 2015 season may provide more insight into what I'm talking about.

His touch was a bad one, as he was running towards the ball before he fell.

 

Also, there was definitely at least 2 (possibly more) defenders well within 15 feet.

Rule 5

You can't use last year's regional game in this situation as we had a different back line. Plus, just because he scores that many goals in a game doesn't mean he'll score for fun in future matches. Also, don't disregard the fact there were many kids in the box.
