In a book certain to spread controversy as it exposes and explores the dramatic problems that jeopardize the sport's future and offers a detailed proposal for reforming the game.

Oh sorry that book by John Underwood was published in 1980.

They were ready to ban the game in 1904, due to the excessive amount of deaths attributed to football. Several happened during games. However, Teddy Roosevelt stepped in to save it.

I think the biggest threat to the game is its popularity that is driving more and more games for players - at all levels.

Someone I know said - "you only get so many snaps". That is true at every level. And sometimes that is due to injuries - that are getting more and more attention.

I think every pro player who played an average career would show signs of head trauma. It comes with the territory. But they are still pushing for the 18 game season, and longer seasons. College has gone from 10 games plus a bowl to 12 games plus a conference championship plus, now, up to a two game playoff - for a total of 15 games for two teams at the college level. More games = more contact = more injuries - both short term and long term. Even HS / MS and PS school level has gone to more games it seems.

Those in control need to admit that more games, more full contact practices, longer season are detrimental overall to those playing the game.

Football is great team building sport at the various levels, it should stay as a great American sport. But care needs to be given to avoid the negative impacts that come with more and more and more. And the pro level sets the tone. The NFL would do good to not try to expand the seasons anymore and colleges would do good to keep from expanding their season - no matter how much the TV networks throw at them.

So this book was published in 1980? Did he predict when football would go away because it has been almost 40 years since this book was published.
