July 19, 201610 yr I like the 6 month idea for a first offense. I would hate to see someone lose a career because they still had the equivalent of a drink in their system the next morning. Now if they blow anything over an 0.4 then I say clip their wings and never let them fly again. To answer the question, in practice it sounds good, it also sounds expensive. If a pilot knows he's flying the next morning, he shouldn't be drinking the night before. It's just that simple.

You know what happens if you do not obey the rules (I get that). You break the rules and you get the punishment you knew your were going to get and complain? (I don't get that).

July 19, 201610 yr Know a few pilots. They say the planes pretty much fly themselves, they are their in case it stops flying itself correctly. Yes test them and they must be sober. Not sure about the punishment since they would have never piloted the plane hammered because the testing would have prevented that. I would say some type of abuse program and treatment. They are union so you are not firing them on a first offense.

July 19, 201610 yr I would think like other jobs you would need a reason to test them. There isn't some trend of drunk pilots crashing planes. So I doubt a business wants to incurr that cost. I feel like we are creating a problem when there isn't one. You hire people you trust if they give you a reason not to trust then you test.

That's what bus drivers do and tug boat captains, train engineers, rail engineers, taxi drivers, streetcar engineers, and many other of examples that are more accurate comparisons. They aren't even in the 2nd tier of examples I would use to describe someone who operates a piece of equipment.
