Charleston, SC....What to Do?

Featured Replies

Heading to Myrtle Beach tomorrow night. While there, we're taking a day trip to Charleston.

We'll be there roughly 10-12 hours. What are a few things that are musts? The only thing planned is to check out a brewery (I'm thinking Holy City as of right now).

Just walk around. Such a cool city. I love all the old architecture. And you can cover many interesting city blocks just walking around.

Can't recall. Was there for a night waiting to board a cruise ship the next day. I just remember walking around. There is a "haunted Charleston" walking tour--but we did not partake. Seemed interesting, though.

Go downtown and tour the Battery -- the architecture, the history, and the views are all amazing. Go to Patriot's Point near Mt. Pleasant. The area around College of Charleston, a few blocks from the Battery, is really cool too for guys your age (you know, all hip and stuff).

Hip I am not. :lol2:

Good stuff my man. Thanks!

I believe that State St has really good shopping. Go to the old Trading Market (where slaves were once bought and sold), it is a flea market now with some really nice stalls where they sell hand crafted items. Walk about the Battery and through the streets and just enjoy the beautiful homes. You can visit Ft. Sumter--it is worth it for the boat ride through Charleston Harbor. I agree with Patriots Point. You can tour the Yorktown and other military watercraft. There is a nice pier near the South Carolina aquarium, you can walk out on the pier, I remember there being porch type swings you can sit on. There are plenty of carriage rides to be had :-), the College of Charleston is gorgeous and definitely worth a walk through. I love Charleston :-)

When you say walk around, is there a specific area?

Downtown isn't very big. What are you trying to do? Mente is correct in that he hits the cool spots for history buffs. If you are going to just hang out and bar hop go to State and Market and work your way around from there. SO many good restaurants there.

When you are in Myrtle Beach do this. Charleston Watersports, Jet Ski Rentals & More | HydroFly We did that in Charleston. It is AWESOME. Totally worth the money.

Edit: Not sure if Hydrofly is still operating in Myrtle Beach. Definitely worth calling and asking.

Really just looking to explore, see what all the city has to offer. Not looking to bar hop, but we are planning to eat all 3 meals there...Any suggestions?

Believe me, I'd love to do it. Pregnant wife, not so much. I'm just happy she's willing to do a brewery with me. :lol2:

Do lunch at Vickery's in Mt. Pleasant. The food is great, and there is a walking pier that goes out into the bay that is beautiful, and it is also where a ton of the shrimp boats dock. Dinner should be Pearlz Oyster Bar -- fantastic!!

Pregnant wife???? In that heat and humidity? Poor girl. Do Mente's suggestion and explore. The aquarium is really cool. Will she want to see the Air Craft carriers and old ships and planes? If not you may want to skip Patriot's Point to save some time, but traffic there isn't really all that bad. Parking is.

I was wrong before, King St has a ton of restaurants. However, Going to Marion Square would be a good place park and start your walk. You can't go wrong w/ any of the restaurants really. If there is one thing that Charleston has in spades, it is great places to eat.

White Garden Point and WaterFront Park should have better parking when you go to visit them so you don't walk too terribly much.

Is that where Shem Creek goes into the harbor?
