Beechwood repeats as 35th District champs

For the second straight year, the Beechwood Tigers are the 35th District champions.

The Tigers took down archrival Covington Catholic, 6-1, Wednesday night in the district finals at Meinken All-Star Field. Senior starting pitcher Brayden Combs was named the tournament’s most valuable player after throwing a complete game while striking out six on the mound and driving in a run at the plate with a single in the third inning.

“It’s good because (CovCath) owned us there for a while,” Beechwood coach Bob Mullins said. “So it’s nice to win a couple back-to-back. It will be tough in years to come losing all these seniors, but it’s always good for them to go out with a win against (CovCath).”

Both teams will advance to next week’s Ninth Region tournament at Florence Freedom Field. The regional draw will be held Sunday morning, with first round games being played on Monday.

Anybody share details, please. Had to leave bottom of 3rd and BW up 3-0. What happened after that?

Don't remember exact details, but Mayer came in for pitzer. Beechwood still didn't hit all that well. In my opinion most of the 6 runs were unearned. I think BW had about 3 solid hits. CC had a few hits with a triple off the fence in left field which resulted in their one run. Combs pitched the whole game. I'm hoping BW bats wake up to get out of the region.

Pitzer gave up 4 runs with 1 earned. I think Mayer gave up 2 with both being earned.

I could agree with you on that. In general, I thought the pitching was great, defense for CC was shaky and Beechwood's bats were flat.

Defense for CovCath has been shaky all year. Going to be tough to win the region without very solid defense.

Have to say though, the second baseman made a very nice double play.
