Newport Central Catholic 5 St. Henry 1 (9th Region All A Semi-Final)

Featured Replies

NewCath saddles the Cru with their 1st setback of the 2016 campaign at Villa Madonna this evening in the 1st semi-final game of the 9th Region All A Classic. The Breds will play the winner of Friday's other semi-final match-up between Holy Cross & Ludlow, on Saturday at 1:00 at Villa Madonna.

A standing room only crowd saw NewCath's Haley Meyers go the distance striking out 9 and walking ZERO, while only giving up 4 hits (2 of which were of the infield variety in the 3rd, a Stewart double in the 6th, & a Pollard single in the 7th.) So. shortstop, Lexy Breen with a big night at the plate going 3-3, Meyers 3-4, and Jr. Kennedy Bin with 2 RBI for NewCath.

St. Henry went 1,2,3 in the 1st on GO4-3, GO1-4-3, & GO4-3. NewCath gets all they need in their half of the 1st as Katherine Schreiber leads off with a single thru the 5-6 hole, Alex Burkart lays down a beautiful sac-bunt and Schreiber doesn't stop running till she reaches 3rd base. Kennedy Bin gets an RBI GO6-3. Haley Meyers then doubles to the right-center gap and comes home on Lexy Breen's single to left-center.

The Cru go down on 3 K's in the 2nd. NewCath plates one in the 2nd on the Cru's only error of the game....Katie Kelly is HBP, Kacy Zimmerman with a beautiful bunt for a single, following a K, Kelly scores on an E6.

The Cru dent the plate for their only run in the 3rd......with 1-out, JoAnna Rebitski reaches on Catchers Interference, following a K, Jessie Roark reaches on an infield single and Rebitski scores on Becknell's infield single to the right of the 2nd base bag (Breds Jenna Fryer with a nice diving stop to keep Roark from scoring).

The Cru threat in the 6th on a 2-out MONSTER shot by Gabby Stewart that goes for a double (EASILY out at any other field) and following the only NewCath error (by DLG 2.0 ) the Cru have'em at 2nd and 3rd, but the inning ends on a PO-4.

NewCath gets 2 more in the 6th, after one out both Schreiber and Burkart work walks, and both score on RBI knocks by Meyers and Breen. (NewCath left 10 runners on base for the game including 2 in the 3rd, 3 in the 5th (bases loaded and no out and didn't score), and 2 in the 6th.)

St. Henry would get a 7th inning lead-off single to right-center from Ashley Pollard, but that is it.

St. Henry 0-0-1-0-0-0-0---1-4-1

NewCath 2-1-0-0-0-2-x---5-9-1

NewCath - Meyers 9K's, 0 BB's, 3-4, double RBI. Bin 2RBI, Breen 3-3, RBI

St. Henry - Roark 7K's, Stewart double.

BTW, tip off the cap to the Villa ground crew, infield was beautiful and the sparkling white bases (was told they clean them with Clorox)...nice touch. :ylsuper:

Also, there was a @BigGreenHorse sighting.....front and center with his radar gun......BTW, how fast were the pitchers tonight?

Should have mentioned, JoAnna Rebitski's fly-out to center in the 7th would have cleared any fence other than Villa's.....nice shot JoAnna, and nice job Katherine Schreiber on running it down. :thumb:

Great game.

New Cath played really well, especially the SS and pitcher. Thought they might have dropped off from last year with some Seniors leaving but they didn't drop much.

That's the third hit this week that Gabby Stewart would have hit out on any reasonable field.

She absolutely MASHED that ball tonight, a towering shot to left.....she was not fooled on the change-up one bit.

Good luck in Owensboro. Hope the buffet line is way too long and your hotel runs out of hot water :thumb:

Congrats to the Breds!! Will be seeing some familiar faces in Owensboro at the end of the month.

Isn't there still a game to be played yet?? While I agree NCC should be the favorite, stranger things have happened. This is to take nothing away from their win last night, but that's why they play the full tourney. Also, why did the championship game change from NKU to Villa? Thought the venue of NKU was a great place for everyone and would also bring nicer crowds.

I plead the 5th your honor.

Everybody else said ok because it's the only time Villa can make any $ on games?

I Think my Radar gun might break if we put it on Lawnboy and Tom Baynum returning to the buffet at Moonlight Bar B Q. Baynum was clocked at 59 mph last year but it slowed to 47 after three trips. Both pitchers were hitting 50 consistently but when it counted Miss Meyers reached back and touched 55 highest Ive seen this year. Good luck to the Breds except when we play :thumb:

I overlooked the thread title...no disrespect to other teams....I thought it was the final.

And that's a stupid comment

Nobody makes money on these tournaments - only the concessions do
