Mike Isley is Trimble County's New Head Coach

Featured Replies

From a confirmed source, Mike Isley has been named the new Head Coach of Trimble County. He served as assistant Coach under Chris Collins at the High School (4-17)career at TC) in 2010 and then went to the middle school level to become the Head Coach 2013-15. He will be the 6th Head Coach at Trimble County in the past 10 years. (Poynter 2005-08(21-23), Chism Dec-May 2009, Collins 09-10 (4-17), William Blair 2011(2-8), Justin Franklin 2012-15(4-37).

What are sum of your thoughts on this decision by the school?

Chism was not a coach for the length of time listed. At best, it was six weeks and it definitely ended March 30th.

I would have loved to see what Johnny Poynter might have done with the program had he stayed longer. The Raiders won their first playoff game under him and had their first winning season in years.

Good luck to the Raiders and their new coach. Best of luck to Coach Franklin in his new endeavors.

Did they have another choice? I'm not trying to knock on the coach they picked, but Trimble's location and size makes that a tough job.

With that said, seems like the coach loves the area and wants to be there. Just gotta give him support

Will his brother be joining him on staff?

Isley has been an assistant on the high school level and a head coach at the middle school. From what I've heard so far, this seems to be a popular choice.

I don't get this attitude... Why would someone automatically assume that a MS coach is not prepared to be an HS head coach? Would you have a problem if they hired a HS assistant? To me, a MS head coach at least has experience running a program - organizing practices, managing a staff, dealing with administration & parents, etc.

Those are the benefits to hiring a MS head coach, rather than a HS assistant. What are the drawbacks? Unless you assume that a MS coach just doesn't know the game as well - which CAN be true, but certainly is not ALWAYS true.

Good point. In this case it seems like the Coach has ties to the community and has coached most of the players on the current varsity team. The way people automatically get the red butt when a Middle School Head Coach is hired is pretty foolish. There will definitely be cases where it won't work out, but TC has tried the other way without much success. Hard for me to say this is a mistake before the guy even gets a chance to run a practice, much less a game.

TC has done this transition before, Coach Blair was the Middle School Head Coach for one season and was hired as the interim Head Coach of High School because Collins resigned so late. Isley does have more experience under his belt. And like @OLinePride said he knows most of the players on this team. Interested to see what offense and defense he installs with his current personal.

I think he can gain some community support and parents. Really, the only issue I see is keeping players eligible and attending practice. Coach Franklin spoke many times of how much it hurt his preparation this past fall when he got the email saying certain players were ineligible or they didn't attend practice(non school related activities).

Also True blue (and gold) thank you for the correction on Chism, was unsure how long he was in charge.

I will get bashed for saying this, but there are some MS coaches that would turn programs around quickly if they ever decided to be a HS head coach. Most don't want to due to the offseason commitments which I understand. Of the MS coaches that have been hired this year, I know most of them, and they are more than qualified.

In the case of Trimble Co, this was a smart move.

Another ms coach hired what a joke!

I think Isley also played college ball at Hanover, under legendary Coach Perry, but I could be mistaken. You have a guy with high school and college playing experience, was an assistant at the varsity level, head coach at middle school level, and is deeply invested in the community... I'd say that's a good hire for Trimble, and it is in fact your assessment that is the joke.
