Russell versus Cabell Midland

Featured Replies

Russell did well. I believe the score was 24-7 Russell. Russell continues to get better everywhere. Cabell Midland is a great football team with lots of size and talent. I thought Russell was just more physical than Midland. Both Jones and Sizemore took snaps at QB and both looked really well, though timing was a bit off but that will come with practice. Both threw the ball really well. Kasey looked like Kasey when he played, he only ran a hand full of plays. I think the coaches remember a certain back who got hurt in a scrimmage couple of years ago. Overall, I was impressed with Russell because of the quality of Midland, they are a great team. They look like they are coming together as a team. Good news for Devil fans.

Who is running at the fullback spot right now?

You always try to keep pre-season scrimmages in perspective...We know it's a time to try things & fine tune for the regular season...But, it's hard not to be excited about the possibilities after Russell's second scrimmage against one of the pre-season favorites in AAA in West Virginia, Cabell Midland...They would be 4A if they were in Ky...Look at this pre-season report from the ABC affiliate for West Virginia...http://www.wchstv.com/newsroom/sports/Countdown06_cabellmidland.shtml

When I walked in tonight & saw the size of their players I knew this would be a big test for Russell...Granted, few teams will have bigger players than our bookend tackles Toby Hicks & Seth Harvey, but they had several players that dwarfed the rest of our team...

The first series we ran 10 plays with our first team with Sizemore at QB...We steadily moved down the field aided by a nice long pass...We gained a first down within 4 plays the whole way down the field...With 4th & goal at the 5 we were stopped inside the 1 yd line...It would have been 1st down but it was our 10th play so we just missed a TD but moved the ball well...On the first defensive series they moved the ball well until they got to our 30 then we made some sacks & they had a penalty & stalled just inside our 50...First defense looked good...

The next series Jones took over at QB without Clark in the backfield and several other subs in...They marched down the field and scored & made the extra point...Our second team defense stopped them again without allowing them to get into the red zone...7-0 after 2 series...

3rd team took the ball down the field & scored next series...Missed the extra point, which most missed including the scorekeeper, then held them on defense again...13-0

First offense went back out without Clark & Lewis in the backfield...Lewis was sick on the sideline & I saw them stretching Kasey as well...We moved down the field again gaining 1st downs within 4 plays but got to the 10th play & kicked a 33 yard field goal...16-0 They then marched down on our 2nd defense and threw a TD pass that somehow got between the 2 defenders that were all over their receiver...It was a nice catch 16-7

We did score 1 more TD, again without Clark & Lewis on the field, and held them scoreless the rest of the way...Final 23-7 if there would have been an official score kept...

The fact that we scored all our points without our top 2 returning running backs, with Clark being mentioned as a possible Mr Football candidate, is a big reason people are getting more excited about this team's chances...Actually, as mentioned already, Clark played little in tonight's scrimmage...Not to mention, our defense holding two 4A size schools to 1 TD in 2 scrimmages...Midland was a state semi-finalist last year and according to that report, returns most of their offense...

Again, you have to keep the pre-season in perspective...The regular season is a different ballgame but you can't help but be optimistic about the chances for another great year for Coach McGlone & the Devils...Not predicting another championship but certainly expect them to be in the hunt in November...

There you have it Russell fans. You don't get a better report than that. Thanks Devil58. The extra point was good though, just barely staying inside the left post. This is a great accessment of Russell at this moment. Kasey said his back was stinging so they tried stretching it out but come to find out it was a gash on his back probably from someone's long fingernail. It looks kinda bad but he's fine. I take scrimmages for what they're worth, especially Russell's, but I've been impressed with this squad. We'll see what happens, it will be fun to watch.

I think Red Devil fans have to feel good about what they saw last nite on the field. I too was concerned about the size of the Cabell-Midland team. But we owned the line of scrimmage all nite. There were alot of substitutions and tinkering going on for Russell. I don't want to jinx the team, but this could be the year that we go undefeated for the regular season. Ashland will probably be our "gut check" game with the edge for emotion and home field advantage to the Tomcats. Can't wait for the 25th and the Musketeers!!!

Nice preview on Cabell-Midland, they looked good on the field but once again for a team to have the best back field in the state this year in West Virginia with one back having 4.3 speed, They did not impress me like they are suppose to. YEA ITS A SCRIMMAGE, but do you tell your backs- "Dont run hard or try as hard because it is a scrimmage" NO they better give their all out there. CM was a good solid team but the DEvils did really well. You dont know who is going to run the ball. Kasey and Nick were out- Jones looked good- Beekman looked good- DREW ABRAMS- looked outstanding for a sophomore or any year running back. I may have to change my prediction on yardage and scores now that Ihave seen other kids run.

Go Devils and see everyone in Ashland this Friday for a good quality football game. I predict the winner to be ..............

The team who scores the most. There I said it.. I hope for RAMbunctous night.

On the extra point, I was going by the official on the side the ball was kicked signaling that it was no good...Maybe he changed his mind or was just fooling around?? Maybe I was the only one in the stadium he confused!!:D I also agree with Redevil78 that this team has the ability to go undefeated during the regular season just as the 2004 team did...We haven't played a game yet but lets hope we are still talking about this in early November...Undefeated in the regular season is nice but I'd trade last year's one loss & state championship for the way the 2004 season ended anyday...

I totally agree Devil58. I still believe that the Boyd Co. loss was a "wake-up and smell the coffee" event last season. I was just noting that this team seems to have the horses to run the table for the regular season. We could, however, come out flat on any given Friday nite and get beat.

I was at the game and without repeating everything that was said it appeared to me that Russell again has a Fleet of backs who are very capable. I was also impressed with the play of Jones. Good game. Undefeated???? I think at least one loss in a game that means nothing, Greenup, Ashland, Boyd, is a good thing at this level. I think last year it made the team better. They were aware after the Boyd game that they have to play hard every night to win and they did. Oh well just my perspective and what do I know. I think the Ashland game will be a dandy. Ashland wants to avenge last years loss and they will be ready. Russell will be ready too.

Great game Russell players. You young men make our community proud.

Who is running at the fullback spot right now?

Aarron Beekman and Darrell Wells; some Josh Hopper

There were actually TWO different injuries in the same spot. The tightness came from a helmet to the back, the gash came later on...:thumb:

Exactly, I think the Boyd loss was the best thing that happened to last years team.

Oh, that I wasn't aware of.
