Week 1 matchups

Any games that you think will be must sees or upsets, leave your opinion

Most interesting games in western Kentucky:

Friday

Fort Campbell at Paducah Tilghman ... both teams have some question marks. Judging by scrimmage reports, Fort Campbell seems to have reloaded rather nicely, although there is no way they could be as talented as they were last year.

Henderson County at Castle (Ind.) ... Two top programs that might be in down cycles right now.

Mayfield vs. Caldwell County ... part of the Alliance Bowl at Marshall County. If Caldwell really is the best team in their 2A district, they should prevail over as Mayfield squad that was hit hard by graduation and will have a couple of key players out with injuries.

Owensboro at Evansville Mater Dei ... Owensboro might be the west's rising team in 4A. Mater Dei is a traditional power in Indiana.

Owensboro Catholic at South Spencer (Ind.) ... two really good mid-size programs only a few miles apart. Both teams are usually state contenders.

Saturday

Bowling Green at St. Xavier .... part of the Rafferty's Bowl at Western Kentucky University. Last year's game was a classic. Bowling Green's defense should keep it close, and this is a good indicator of whether the Purples (who also have a couple of key injuries) are as strong as they were last season.

Hancock County vs. Louisville Holy Cross ... at the Ray Adams Classic at Papa John's Stadium. If Hancock really is a top-10 team in Class A and a regional contender (some think they are), this should be a good matchup.

Some other games statewide and scores I will be most interested to hear:

Belfry vs. Newport Catholic

Danville vs. Southwestern

Manual vs. Brentwood Academy

Dunbar vs. Montgomery Bell Academy

I think Middlesboro has a excellent chance of knocking off Tennessee 4A power Central.

Is Knoxville Central down this year?

What time is the Manual-Brentwood game?

What time is the Manual-Brentwood game?
Both the KHSAA and TSSAA sites say 5:30 p.m.

Maxwell Stadium or Manual Stadium?

Maxwell Stadium or Manual Stadium?
Heck if I know ... what am I, Manual's SID?

I wouldn't say a "down year" because year after year Central is loaded with talent you could say they reload not rebuild.

They only return 7 starters (3 offense, 4 defense)

==================

Strengths:

Jamie Wilson and Johnny Saah will try to fill the void left by David Gaston, a 1,000-rusher in the regular season. Wilson is stronger and maybe faster than Gaston, while Saah is more of a slashing back. Helton will try to utilize their different styles. Jermaine Kirkland, who played running back in 2005, will move to receiver. Clark McMillan and Courtland Styles will vie for the quarterback job left by Zach Helton, who threw for 1,532 yards and 17 touchdowns in the regular season. Andreas Taylor could emerge as a top receiver. Corey Jeffries will be the top lineman, a two-year starter at tackle. Other linemen must develop quickly: center Brandon Vannoy, guards Bernard Taylor and Nick Saah, and tackles Carter Howard and Tyler Smith. Orlando Blair, Corey Jeffries and Josh Owens lead the defense. Blair, an end, was second on the team in tackles last season with 92 and had 19 sacks. Owens was fourth in tackles with 70 and Jeffries fifth with 66. Other defensive leaders are Jason Hogge, Aaron Heck, Adam Bridges and Tate Hanson.

Weaknesses:

The Bobcats' offense lost a lot at the skill positions, so some playmakers must step up quickly. Defense may have to carry the Bobcats until the offense jells. Central also lost All-PrepXtra kicker, Lones Seiber, who went to Kentucky to kick.

I would think that if Middlesboro has a legitimate shot at beating them, Middlesboro is better than anyone thinks and Central is down. Didn't Central beat Bell County by a couple of touchdowns last year?

Central beat Bell County last season 15 to 30 in a game that was close and as a matter of fact Bell County had 3 chances late in the 4th to take the lead but couldn't convert of 4th down deep inside Central's teriortory (If Bell would have just kicked the FG them 3 times they would have had the lead).

But back to M'boro/Central what worries me the most for Middlesboro is fatigue.

Most of our players play offense/defense and some on special teams while Central might have 1 or 2 that play both offense and defense.

It might be a tight game and come 4th quarter Central will definitely have the advantage of fresh bodies.

The Ft. Campbell-Tilghman game should be a good one. Ft. Campbell dominated last year with that great team they had and Tilghman seem to have some conditioning problems late in the game. With Ft. Campbell you just never know when a Micah Johnson will transfer in on a parent's military orders. Oh the flip side you never know when they will transfer out either. Tilghman looked a lot bigger last year, it came down to speed and conditioning v. size and strength, and speed won out last year. Interesting opener, can't wait.
