March 7, 201610 yr This is the amount of total losses in the top 25. Has there ever been a year with this many losses where the team average is 7?
March 7, 201610 yr Probably not in my lifetime. Call it parity or whatever, but it's certainly a down year for college basketball. It should make for a fun tournament though.
March 7, 201610 yr Probably not. ESPN Stats and Info: AP Top-10 ranked teams have lost 74 times this year, the most in a single regular season in the AP Poll era. Prev. most - 71 in 2000-01
March 7, 201610 yr Probably not in my lifetime. Call it parity or whatever, but it's certainly a down year for college basketball. It should make for a fun tournament though. What is making it so bad is that the top of the standings there are teams with a multitude of losses and no dominating type team. To me it makes the product poor. As I said in the other thread I started, last season the #1 seeds had a combined 9 losses. This season that number will most likely be doubled or worse. Last year was an anomaly because of UK (like the season before with Wichita State), but that is a huge gap.
March 7, 201610 yr The other thing that skews the 177 number is that the mid-majors are even bad. Generally you have 2-4 mid-majors with great records stay in the rankings all season, but this year it has mostly been power conference representatives.

This is just a down year for college hoops. Even in years when there is a bit of parity, there is always someone or someones that stand out as favorites to win it all. This year I'm not sure there is a team out there that isn't capable of losing game #1 in the tourney. If there was ever a year when a #16 seed could beat a #1 seed, this is it. Some would call that parity, but to me it's just bad basketball.

The pundits disagree with this assessment, saying there is really no more chance of this happening than in any other year.

The pundits disagree with this assessment, saying there is really no more chance of this happening than in any other year. I don't think a 16 has a chance against any of the 1's. Carolina, Villanova, Xavier, Virginia, Kansas, Michigan St or whoever else. Those teams have entirely too much to be beaten by a 16 seed. It just isn't realistic to think about.

Obviously the chances are super slim. The law of averages is bound to catch-up. Keep in mind with two play-in games, two teams that would generally be 15 seeds are now slated to the 16 line. No star talent to speak of, three point line being too close, and foul trouble can lead to madness. You take 19-21 year old kids and place them in Tempe, Arizona for a 11:00 a.m. tip in some oddly staged football stadium weird things happen. I could easily see a scenario where a top team with little depth gets in foul trouble, and some directional school gets hot from 3 to steal a victory.

Even with the "parity" of the top teams, which is why some think chances are greater this year of 16 beating a 1, I still don't think the chances of an upset are any greater this year than any previous year. Yes, it will happen eventually, and it could happen this year (don't bet on it though), but the fact is a not very good and in some cases relatively bad team is still going to be facing a very good team in the 1-16 matchup.
