Central Hardin 72 Caverna 71 (5th Region)

Featured Replies

Central Hardin was up 64-60, Caverna hit a three pointer and the scoreboard read 63-62 Caverna, after consultation with scorers table, it was never corrected, there has to be something done regarding the training of high school officials. Earlier this year Central Hardin was ahead vs Breckenridge County by 1 point with 10 seconds left in the game, Breck drove down missed a shot, time ran out as Breck player rebounded and made a layup. Entire backboard was lit up read as he went up for the shot. The referee ran over to the scorers table, called the basket good, ran off the court, without consulting the other two referees, causing them to stare at each other then run off the court too. Possibly the worst call I have witnessed in 40 years of watching high school basketball. Taylor County fans who were in the stands commented that the same referee had called 7 technical in one of their games earlier in the year.

Two comments/questions:

Are you saying the official called it a 3 when the basket was made and the table only recorded it as 2? Did the table call them over and ask if it was 3? I assume Caverna raised the issue.

Referees don't get together after a last-second shot. The outside official who is away from the table side has the SOLE responsibility for determining if the shot was good. You can say he was wrong in his call but you can't criticize him for not getting together with the other officials. He calls it good. Makes sure the table has it. Gets off the court ASAP.

No, what I am saying is that Central was ahead 64-60, Caverna scored a 3 point basket, they took 2 points away from Central and added 3 points to the Caverna score and never corrected it.

I guess ensuring that you are getting a last second call correct is second to making a call, whether it is correct or incorrect and getting the heck off of the court before you are mobbed.

Sorry. Misread that.

So what did the CH coaches do when they went from up one to down one?

You have at least two books there at the table. If I'm an official (it's not my job to keep track of the score BTW) and a coach says the scoreboard is wrong I come over to the table and ask what the books show. Hopefully, they match. If they do not and we can't reconcile it then I have to tell the scoreboard operator to put up what the OFFICIAL book says.

I can't imagine that your scenario happened as described AND that the books also got it wrong. Was there a conference regarding the correct score?

The most critical thing is if the official score book is correct and that is why each team has a book keeper; to catch these mistakes. Running the scoreboard can be very difficult depending on the type of scoreboard they have. Most of the time these are volunteers from the host school and it can get pretty crazy and frantic especially late in games and is easy to hit the score for the wrong side. Then you have fans yelling, coaches hollering. I've been doing it for years and it never gets easier.
