Should the Bengals consider Alex Mack?

Featured Replies

The Browns have Erving from FSU who can play center.

not very well... The Browns drafted Erving because they knew Mack would likely test the FA market and they wanted to get someone who could play guard (which had been a problem area) and center (in case Mack leaves). Erving was a big disappointment last season. He had many opportunities to play in various positions. It appears he is not strong enough to handle NFL D-linemen yet, and not good enough to be trusted with any spot on the line as a starter. He may develop into what they hoped, but it won't be this year. This left Cleveland vulnerable at center if Mack leaves.

They said there is a good chance he resigns with the Browns.

This is what the Browns hope, but at what cost? Mack is a smart guy and played his cards right. Speculation is he may become the first 10 million dollar man at his position. Cleveland has a lot of cap room but Right Tackle Mitchell Schwartz is also hitting FA. He is younger (26) and the right tackle position is becoming more important due to defenses moving their top rushers around--like Von Miller. BTW, Schwartz had a very good game against Miller last year.

Schwartz figures to fetch less money than Mack on the open market. So i think Cleveland will make it a priority to get Schwartz and Mack will be second only because Mack is likely to demand more money. I'd like to see them wind up with both lineman but given the realities of the business that is the NFL, I don't think it's likely.

In answer to the guru's OP, I don't think the Bengals are going to spring for champagne on the O-line.

If they think they are going to lose Sanu then they need a WR with the pick although I prefer Eli Apple with Dennard being the 3rd CB/safety hybrid.

Sanu was their number 3 wr and 4th and sometimes 5th option in the passing game. Losing Sanu won't dictate what they do in first round. Marvin Jones is what will dictate if and when they pick a wr. If they sign him back they may wait until later to draft a wr. If they don't sign Jones back then wr will be a very early need and possibly first round pick.
