For the first time in a long time, the 14^th Region Host (Knott County Central) will host the tournament without the home town team participating due to being eliminated in district play. Let’s take a look at the matchups for the 2015-16 14^th Regional Tournament.

 

 

Perry County Central vs. Estill County:

First meeting in a long time between these two teams. Perry Central has been the region favorite since before the season started and they’ve backed it up each and every game plus they are the hottest team heading into the tournament as they’ve won 4 straight and 9 of their last 10 games.

 

Estill County has been struggling all season but they are a very young team. Engineers have won 4 of their last 6 games.

 

 

Jackson City vs. June Buchanan:

In the only meeting on the season between the two, June Buchanan cruised past Jackson City 55-31 but the Tigers have been on a roll since then, having won 10 of their last 12 games including a 3 game win streak (Current).

 

4 of JBS 9 losses have came against region opponents, Crusaders have fallen to Letcher Central (twice), Knott Central and Hazard. Crusaders come in at 19-9. Last time JBS played in the 14^th region tournament, the Crusaders fell to Wolfe County 66-64 in the opening round.

 

 

Powell County vs. Breathitt County:

Pirates come in riding high after crusing past district foe, Estill County in the 56^th district championship game but the Pirates have lost 4 of their last 7 games. Powell County split the season with Breathitt county winning 52-40 and losing 84-56.

 

Bobcats have been on the upside as of late, winning 4 of their last 5 games heading into the region tourney. One of those 4 wins was against the Pirates as they cruised past Powell County 84-46.

 

 

Letcher County Central vs. Buckhorn:

Both teams split the regular season, ironically, both teams won by 10 points, They were just 6 points off (3 each team) of being the same exact score of the first game, LCC 61-51…Buckhorn 64-54. This game should be one of the better first round games.

 

Coach Noble has a great squad and has been one of the hotter teams heading into the regional tournament, winning 8 of their last 10 games.

TOP 10 PLAYERS:

1. Torrell Carter (Letcher Central): The Junior forward is probably the best shooter in all of the region. Torrell has 735 of Letcher Central’s 1937 points on the season, averaging right at 28

points a game.

 

 

2. Connor Hoskins (Buckhorn) The senior guard from Buckhorn is having an outstanding year for the Wildcats, averaging 23 PPG a game (45% from 3; 97/203). Connor has a quick trigger, give him an inch of daylight and the shot is going up and it all but likely goes in.

 

 

3. Damon Tobler (Perry Central): The big man for the Commodores has helped lead Perry Central to the title “Favorite” as they have been the favorite to not only win their district but win their region. Tobler averages 14 points a game and 9 boards a game for the Dores.

 

4. James Blair (Perry Central): The second leading scorer and rebounder for the Commodores at 14 ppg and 6 boards a game. Blair plays a big part in the Commodores role and has helped led them to a 21-4 record.

 

5. Josh Crank (Buckhorn): Senior guard for Buckhorn has helped Buckhorn to a 15-14 record. Crank is Buckhorn’s second leading scorer and has scored 372 points for the Horn.

 

6. Adrian Williams (Powell County): The senior guard for the Pirates is having a fantastic year. Adrian comes into the regional tournament, averaging nearly a double double a game.

 

7. Caleb Bonny (Estill County): The sophomore guard for Estill County is having an outstanding year, averaging right at 25 points a game is the work horse for this Engineer team.

 

8. Ryan Boggs (Buckhorn): One of 3 weapons that Coach Noble goes too. Ryan is having a great season averaging 13 points per game and has scored a total of 392 points.

 

9. Justin Baker (Breathitt County): Leading scorer for Breathitt County at 15 points a game. Justin along with Jordan Barnett are the two work horses that run this Bobcat team.

 

10.Jordan Gregory (Letcher Central): Averaging 11 points a game for Coach Hammonds and LCC. Jordan is actually the team’s leading 3 point shooter at 46% on the season.

Because the girls semifinals and finals are Friday/Saturday. The W/R/M/T format for boys is very common across the state.

I admit I'm one that doesn't know much about JBS. They don't play too many teams in my part of the region, usually playing competition in the bottom half of the 14th and schools from the 15th. But obviously they are very good and well coached. They lost by 2 to Cordia (back when Cordia was actually trying to win) in the All A. Who are their go to players and any other info about them. And what chances do they have in upsetting Perry Central?
