SHS Future Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 12th Region Postseason Review and Final Rankings What an awesome year to be a fan of 12th Region basketball. This is one of the top regions in Kentucky and has had two teams ranked in or near the top ten in the state for most of the season. There have been multiple battles and close games that have shown us anyone can beat anyone in the region on any given night. Who will step up in the post season? Who can put a run together that will have them cutting down the nets and planning their trip to Rupp Arena? Over the next few week we will get the opportunity to watch some very good basketball games and see who has what it takes to travel the road to Lexington and represent the 12th Region in the “Greatest Show in Hoops” Good luck to all teams. 1) Mercer County Titans (28-1) 46th District The Titans came into 2015-2016 as the preseason favorite and all season long never left any doubt they were the team to beat in the 12th Region. As a team they lead the state in margin of victory averaging 76 points per game and are holding the opponent to 53 points. This parody could be a result of their strength of schedule but it is more likely because of their size, athletic ability, and coaching. There are not many teams in the state that have the combination of talent this Titans team has and when they come to play you better bring your A game. Mercer County’s offense is full of weapons (top four in the state in field goal percentage averaging 52.7% from the field). Their anchor and team captain is senior point guard Will Hager. Will averages 14.5 points per game on 55% shooting from the field. More important than scoring is his ability to handle the ball and find the open teammate. He will put the team on his shoulders when he has to but with the talent surrounding him he is able to find the opponent’s weakness and capitalize on their mismatches. On the wing the titans have sophomore Trevon Faulkner. Many consider him to be the best player in the 12thRegion regardless of class. He has the ability to take you to the rim or shoot the long range jumper. He averages 19 points per game while averaging 54% from the field and 40% from 3 point range. Junior Dylan James is another threat the Titans have. He is deadly from long range averaging just shy of 46% from the 3 point arch. He can also post you up on the block and play with his back to the basket. Dylan averages 15.4 points per game while shooting 51% from the field. The work horse inside for the Titans is senior Malik Dow. He is averaging a double-double for the year with 12 points per game and bringing down over 10 rebounds per game. Add seniors Drew Davis, Alijah Mink, and Conner Souders, and you have a high powered offense capable of beating anyone in the state. On defense the Titans like to play a matchup zone. With their length they are able to switch on screens while deterring dribble penetration and can cover the outside shot. This makes it difficult for teams to score. Mercer County is also a state leader (4th in the state) in rebounds averaging 37.1 per game so teams have a hard time getting second opportunities to score. There is nothing easy about the 12th Region tournament. If the Titans let up just one game in the post season, they could see their great season come to an end prematurely. On the other hand, if they have the heart and desire, they could make a very long run come March. 2016 Post season matchup: 46th District opening game: Mercer County Titans vs. Burgin Bulldogs 2015 results: Lost to Lincoln County in the 12th Region Semifinals Last Region title: (2000) Mercer County 56 Harrodsburg 49 (Coach Stacey Hall) 2) Southwestern Warriors (22-5) 48th District The Warriors came into the season with some questions. Sure everyone knew they were going to be a good team and most had them in the top 3 in the 12thRegion preseason polls. But, they had holes to fill from graduation. Now that this regular season has come to an end, there is no doubt the Southwestern Warriors are a 12th Region contender capable of making it to Rupp. Not only have they been the #2 team in the region for most of the season, they have consistently been ranked in the top 15 in the state. As a team the Warriors are ranked in the top 10 of the state in scoring (if they would file stats) averaging almost 73 points per game. They are a very good shooting team that relies on shots beyond the arch to extend the defense which allows for good dribble penetration. Junior point guard Peyton Gover is their sharpshooter. If you do not get a hand in his face he will light you up as evident in the game versus Wayne County when he scored a season high 41 points. He is also very good at penetrating to the basket which makes him a potent offensive threat. Sophomore swingman Steven Fitzgerald is another scoring machine for the Warriors. He is an athletic guard that can take you to the rim and finish with authority. He is considered by some as the top player in the state for the class of 2018. Sophomore guard Danny Butt is another one of the many shooters the Warriors have. He plays a physical game but has great touch from beyond the arch. This trio of guards can be considered the best backcourt in the 12th Region. Add to them junior guard Peyton Cundiff, sophomore guard Hunter Stephens, and the frontcourt of senior Austin Clark and sophomore Logan Dykes, and you have a team that may not have size but has a lot of determination. On the defensive side, the Warriors like to play man to man. They also like to bring pressure on the guards which can lead to turnovers. They will switch to zone but still like to bring pressure. Their transition from turnovers leads to easy scores if you can’t handle the intense defense. This is a young team so the future is bright for the Warriors. They have the opportunity this year to let the state take notice of who the Southwestern Warriors are. So, there is no doubt their eyes are set on cutting down the nets and representing the 12th Region in Rupp Arena come March. Post Season Matchup: 48th District opening game: Southwestern vs McCreary Central 2015 Result: Lost to Mercer County in the 12th Region quarterfinals Last Region Title: (2012) Southwestern 76 Boyle County 69 (Coach Steve Wright) 3) West Jessamine Colts (17-12) 46th District This West Jessamine team like so many other Damon Kelly teams is peaking at the right time. They have had their ups and downs this season but the Colts have played a difficult schedule and it has them ready for the play-offs. As a team West Jessamine is averaging approximately 71 points per game while shooting 48% from the fields and 36% from behind the arch. The Colts are led by senior forward Siah Holifield who averages 19 points per game while shooting 53% from the field. He also leads the team in rebounds averaging 6.3 per game. Along with Holifield the Colts get their scoring from junior guard Isaiah Okesson who averages 14 points per game. He is also their best outside shooter averaging 38% from behind the arch. Add in junior Kendell Peters, junior Bradley Tullar, senior Camron Seaters, senior Wells Ducas, and junior John Davis, and you have the recipe for a region title run. This group of seniors has won the 46th district 2 out of the last 3 years and wouldn’t it make a statement to the rest of the region if they were able to bring home the district trophy one last time. Although a district title would be nice, I believe the Colts are eyeing something bigger. But, to get the big trophy and have the opportunity to play in Rupp Arena they will need three wins in a very difficult 12th Region tournament. West Jessamine has not won a 12th Region tournament game in the last two season, but the Colts know what it will take to get this team to achieve their goal. Post Season Matchup: 46th District opening game: West Jessamine vs East Jessamine 2015 Results: Lost to Wayne County in the 12th Region quarterfinals Last Region Title: (2010) West Jessamine 51 Mercer County 48 (Coach Damon Kelley) 4) Wayne County Cardinals (17-10) 48th District The Cardinals came into the 2015-2016 season as one of the top teams in the 12thRegion. Now that the regular season has concluded, the Cardinals are close to their preseason expectations but have lost a couple of games late in the season many expected them to win. But don’t fret too much because the Cardinals have one of the best coaches in the state on their sidelines and he will have them ready for the postseason. Wayne County is a well-rounded team that ranks in the top 20 in the state for team scoring average (70.7 points per game), free throw shooting (75.3% from the line), and team rebounding (averaging 37 per game). The Cardinals are not a deep team but none of Coach Woods’ region championships teams ever seem to have depth so this is not a disadvantage. They have size and very good guard play that is capable of beating any team in the region. Early in the season they lost a thriller in double overtime to Southwestern 106-110 but turn around and beat the Warriors in another classic 82-81 three weeks ago. It just shows that this team is capable of winning the region like so many Wayne County teams of past. The Wayne County Cardinals are led by senior point guard Trey Blevins. He is the heart and soul of this Cardinals team and plays the game with passion. He is a four year starter and leads the team in scoring this season averaging over 22 points a game while shooting 42% from the field. He is also one of the state’s top free throw shooters averaging 87% from the line. His teammate senior Corey Stearns is also a four year starter and is a big factor in this team’s success. Corey was injured and missed most of December but he has since returned and averages over 16 points per game. Senior Nick Gillespie and sophomore Jakson Baker lead the team in rebounds both averaging 8 rebounds per game. Gillespie also has one of the top 20 field goal percentages shooting 66%. Since Wayne County is not deep they tend to play half-court defense. They play a matchup zone that gives opponents difficult opportunities to score. They are also really good at going from defense to transition offense leading to easy layups. The seniors know this is their last opportunity to get to Rupp Arena. Those seniors have had stellar careers traveling the road to Rupp 2 out of the last 3 years. With only one more opportunity ahead of them, you can bet they will lay it all on the line to cement their legacy in Wayne County history. Post Season Matchup: 48th District Championship game: Wayne County vs the winner of Southwestern /McCreary Central 2015 Result: Lost to Boyle County in the 12th Region semifinals. Last Region Title: (2014) Wayne County 78 Southwestern 74 (Coach Rodney Woods) 5) Pulaski County Maroons (16-12) 47th District Pulaski County has been associated with the 47th District since 2006. The Maroons have won the district every year between 2006 and 2015 except 2009. That puts them currently as the 6 time defending 47th District champions and winners of 9 of the last 10 titles. Well, the Maroons do not plan on ending that streak anytime soon but this year will definitely be a challenge for them. Pulaski County relies a lot on their defense holding opponents to 60 points per game while averaging 67 points per game on offense. The Maroons leader is point guard Riley Hall. Most know him as the all state quarterback but he can also handle the round ball. He averages scoring 16 points per game but is one of the top free throw shooters in the state with an 86% average. The Maroons are led in scoring by junior guard Landon Powell. In his first year with the Maroons, Landon has averaged 18 points per game on 54% shooting from the field and 42% from 3 point range. This year Hall and Powell have made for a nice duo in the backcourt for Pulaski County. But, the Maroons also have a solid inside presence with junior Treyvon Sylvester. The big man was injured through the month of December but has found his stride averaging almost 14 points per game and 7 rebounds. Sophomore Hagan Elmore, senior George Gregory, senior Steffan Stevens, senior Mason Helton, and senior Michael Dobbs are also contributors to the Maroons success. Although the Maroons have had success in the district, it has not translated into success in the 12th Region tournament. Pulaski has been eliminated in the first round of the region the last 4 years. The Maroons are looking to change that this year but to get that chance they will have to get by a tough district opponent in Casey County. Post Season Matchup: 47th District opening game: Pulaski County vs Casey County 2015 Results: Lost to Boyle County in the 12th Region quarterfinals Last Region Title: (1992) Pulaski County 88 Laurel County 76 (Coach Dave Fraley) 6) Lincoln County Patriots (17-11) 45th District The Patriots came into this season with the perception it was a rebuilding year due to graduation of practically all of their offensive productivity. But, it didn’t take long for this new group of Patriots to gel and continue the winning ways of so many Lincoln County teams of past. They received the top seed in the 45thDistrict tournament after going 5-1 in a very competitive district and are looking to once again make it to the 12th Region tournament. They are led in scoring by junior guard Noah Young averaging 16.9 points per game and senior forward Wade Goode who is averaging 16.1 per game. Young gets his points from dribble penetration and from the free throw line. He is also a decent 3 point shooter so he is a well-rounded offensive threat. Goode gets most of his points from inside the paint but he will step out to take an occasional 3 point shot. He shoots a team high 57% from the field. Junior shooting guard Devin Alcorn is the Patriot’s main outside threat shooting over 37% from long range. Add senior Preston Ledford and junior Tanner Mcaninch and you have a team ready to make some noise in the post season. Post Season Matchup: 45th District opening game: Lincoln County vs Garrard County/KSD Winner 2015 Results: Lost to Boyle County in the 12th Region Championship game Last Region Title: (2008) Lincoln County 51 West Jessamine 36 (Coach Jeff Jackson) 7) Rockcastle County Rockets (18-11) 47th District The Rockets have been a surprise team this year. They had a record of 10-16 last year and this year they are on the verge of a 20 win season thanks in part to a junior class that has stepped up to the challenge. This year they ended an 11 game losing streak to Pulaski County and they also beat Wayne County for the first time since 2009. The Rockets play an up tempo style averaging over 73 points per game as a team which puts them in the top 10 productive offenses in the state. They are also #8 in the state in free throw percentage averaging over 74% from the line and a top 20 team from 3 point range shooting 38.2%. The Rockets go to player is junior center Lucas Gentry. He is a force on the inside and is averaging 22 points per game while shooting 63% from the field. He is also bringing down over 8 rebounds per game. Another scoring threat for the Rockets is junior shooting guard John Cornelius who is averaging almost 15 points per game while shooting 44% from 3 point range. Junior point guard Carson Noble is also adding 14 points per game and senior Dylan Rowe is scoring almost 12 points. This is a well balanced team that should be very competitive in the post season. Post Season Matchup: 47th District opening game: Rockcastle County vs Somerset 2015 Results: Lost to Pulaski County in the 47th District opening game Last Region Title: (2004 13th Region) Rockcastle Co. 49 Knox Central 48 (Coach Clayton Cash) 8) Casey County Rebels (12-17) 47th District Casey County has had their ups and downs this season. They were hyped as a top 5 team in the region to start the season but got off to a rocky start that had them fall out of the top 10 at one point. Granted they played a very difficult schedule but they were also getting beat by teams that left people scratching their heads. But, Casey County looks to have gotten back on track and the way they are playing are capable of beating anyone in the region. They are headed into the postseason full steam ahead and opponents better not overlook the Rebels. This team has the ability to get on a streak that could find themselves playing deep into the region. The Rebels are led by junior shooting guard Jacob Smith. He is averaging 20.4 points per game while shooting 35.7% from 3 point range. Junior point guard Colin Miller is adding 16 points per game. In the paint the Rebels are led by senior center DJ White. He is averaging 13 points per game while shooting 63% from the field. Add senior Wyatt Sloan, junior Breece Hayes, and freshman Maximo Reyes and you have a team ready to make some noise in the playoffs. Post Season Matchup: 47th District opening game: Casey County vs Pulaski County 2015 Results: Lost to Lincoln County in the 12th Region quarterfinals Last Region Title: (1993) Casey County 66 McCreary Central 64 (Coach Jack Stanford) 9) Boyle County Rebels (13-10) 45th District Boyle County was unsure of what they would have this year after the graduation of an outstanding 2015 class that led them to the final four of the state tournament last season. They started this season with a 12-2 record and looked to be moving their way up the rankings in the 12th region. But, since then they have lost 8 of their last 9 games heading into the playoffs. Granted it was a difficult schedule coming down the stretch, it did provide learning opportunities to take to the playoffs. They are hoping to change the direction in the postseason as they play Danville in the first game of district play. They are 2-0 versus the Admirals this season and with a victory it will give them a chance to defend their title in the 12th Region tournament. The Rebels are led by senior center Colton Elkins. He is an intimidating force in the paint that leads the team in scoring, rebounds, and block shots. He is averaging a double-double with 13.2 points per game and 11.2 rebounds. He has 135 block shots on the year and he is currently ranked #8 in the state in rebounds per game. Outside scoring comes from sophomore Bryce Slone and senior Josiah Robbins. They are averaging 11.4 and 11.7 points per game respectively. The point is held down by Jason “Baby J” Alexander who also adds almost 10 points per game in scoring. The Rebels take pride in their man to man defense and tend to have an advantage when they are in a low scoring game. As a team the Rebels are also a state leader in team rebounds averaging almost 37 rebounds per game. So, they minimize the opportunities for the opposing team. Look for the Rebels to come out with a purpose this postseason and goal to defend their title. Post Season Matchup 45th District opening game: Boyle County vs Danville 2015 Results: 12th Region Champions Last Region Title: (2015) Boyle County 48 Lincoln County 46 (Coach Steve Adams) 10) Somerset Briar Jumpers (13-14) 47th District The Jumpers were written off this year as a youthful team building for the future. They had only one returning starter and one other that saw a little varsity action last season. No one expected them to be even close to a winning season this year. People would say they were too young and inexperienced this year and would take their lumps. Well, they did take their lumps early in the season and have steadily improved as the season progressed. Now the Jumpers are peaking at the right time. This past week they did something a Jumper team hasn’t done since 2011 and that is beat Southwestern. And not just a Southwestern team, but a #11 ranked team in the state Southwestern team! This has the Jumper faithful believing maybe, just maybe this young jumper team can pull off at least one more win and get to the 12th Region tournament for the first time since 2013. But that will be no easy task as they will play the #1 seed in the 47th District Rockcastle County who is hosting the district tournament. The Jumpers find their chemistry in a group of sophomores that have grown up as the season progressed. Sophomore shooting guard Kross Grundy leads the team in scoring averaging just shy of 18 point on the season while shooting 38% from 3 point range. Sophomore center Trae Harmon is a beast inside and is right at a double-double for the season averaging 14.5 points and 9.4 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Jake Cothron is adding over 12 points per game while shooting 35% from beyond the arch. Add in sophomore Josh Cornett, senior John Wilson, and junior Jarrod Childers and you have a group that could surprise a few teams this post season. Post Season Matchup: 47th District opening game: Somerset at Rockcastle County 2015 Postseason Results: Lost to Casey County in the district Last Region Title: (1985) Somerset 63 Danville 47 (Coach Kirk Chiles) 11) Danville Admirals (15-14) 45th District The Danville Admirals have had in all respect a good season. They are a senior led team that has won the 12th Region All A Classic two years straight. They have had their ups and downs this season but have won more than they have lost. The Admirals are looking to make it to the 12th Region tournament for the first time since 2011. But, to do that the Admirals will have to beat Boyle County in the first round of the 45th District tournament. These two teams have faced each other twice this year with Boyle County winning both games. The Admirals are led by senior guard Spencer McKinney. He is the heart of this Admirals team and leading scorer averaging over 20 points per game. Other contributors this season for Danville have been seniors Mattew Turner, Jakobi Turner, Gerald Miller, John Roney, Darious Wilson, and sophomore Jared Southerland. The group of seniors on this Admirals team does not want their high school career to end this week. Boyle better bring their game because this Danville Admirals team will leave everything on the court to keep this season alive. Post Season Matchup: 45th District opening game: Danville vs Boyle County 2015 Results: Lost to Boyle County in the 45th District Last Region Title: (1990) Danville 65 Lincoln County 63 (Coach Roscoe Denny) 12) Garrard County Golden Lions (14-14) 45th District Garrard County is a much improved team this season. This is one of the best teams the Golden Lions have fielded in quite some time. They are on the verge of their first winning season since 2009 but will need a victory or two in the post season to secure that feat. But they are eyeing more than just a winning season. They would like to be a part of the 12th Region tournament which is something that has eluded them since 2005. Garrard County is led by a trio of seniors. Swingman Nick McCullum has been the leading scorer, Slade Crutchfield has been the leading rebounder, and Mike Redmon has had a strong inside game for the Golden Lions. Other contributors have been junior Parker Daily, junior Jacob Barker, and sophomore Justin Preston. Although Garrard County is the #4 seed in the 45th District tournament they are very capable of winning the district tournament. They have beaten both of the top seeds in Lincoln County and Boyle County this season and believe they can put it together for one final run. It won’t be easy but if there is a year for the Golden Lions this is the year. Post Season Matchup: 45th District opening game: Garrard County vs KY School f/t Deaf 2015 Results: Lost to Lincoln County in the 45th District Last Region Appearance: 2004 as 46th District Champs 13) East Jessamine Jaguars (12-18) 46th District The Jaguars came into the season with nothing to lose. They lost a lot to graduation and transfers which left them nowhere to go but up. And suffice to say they have performed better than most expected. Although they have never broken into the top ten in the region rankings, they have won a few region games. The go to guy for the Jaguars is junior guard Nathan Harper. He is averaging over 18 points per game while shooting 40% from 3 point range. Other contributors are senior point guard Devin Cook, junior center Logan Gayheart, and freshman forward Tyler Pitney. It’s going to take a lot for the Jaguars to advance in the post season, but it would be a great storyline for East to upset crosstown rival West Jessamine in the opening game of the 46th District. They are a young team in an extremely difficult district. They have one win over a 12th Region opponent but found some wins outside the region. They are led in scoring by sophomore Hunter Jones who averages 14 points per game and junior Devon Hamilton adds 12 points. Other contributors are sophomores Devin Strunk, Brandon Troxell, John Cash, and senior Cole Kidd. The Raiders came into the season knowing their post season opponent was either going to be Southwestern or Wayne County. Well, they get Southwestern. Miracles do happen but the odds are the Raiders have one more game before their season ends. This is the first winning season for Burgin since 2012, and their fans have a lot to be proud of. Senior Tommy Lopersto has been a leader for the Bulldogs for the past few years and he will be playing his last game for Burgin this week barring a miracle. Along with Lopresto other seniors Mark Crosby, Chase Hale, Michael Raiser, and Cooper Shearer will be playing their farewell game for the Bulldogs. That is because the Bulldogs get to be the opening game for the #1 team in the region and top 5 team in the state Mercer County Titans. The Bulldogs have only won one post season game in the 46th district and this was back in 1986 when they beat Mercer county 54-53 (OT). They play the game for a reason but the odds are astronomical that Burgin could pull off the upset this year. But, like Jim Carey said in the movie Dumb and Dumber “So your telling me there's a chance!” Good luck to the Bulldogs. KSD will be saying farewell to senior Ryan Mayes. He has been the leading scorer for the Colonels this year averaging 13.5 points per game. They will also be saying farewell to seniors Jeffery Couch, Jonathan Demaree, Cody Dowwney, and Bruce Gemmer. The Colonels will be playing Garrard County in the first round of the playoffs. They are a very big underdog in this game. First Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Excellent job and, like has been said, thanks for the significant effort involved. It's very evident! Good to see Elkins in the top 5. He hasn't received as much attention this year as some of the others that made the list. His contribution is much greater than his points and rebounds would indicate. Also, I know he has missed some games due to injury this year but I think Stearns should be higher. As I've said before, I'm a fan of his game. He can score in multiple ways, is a good rebounder and is a good defender. That said, it's hard to pick anyone above him to move down the list.
