3rd Region Rankings (1/4/16)

Featured Replies

Now that the holiday tournaments are over, the second half of the season is about to get underway. Through the first month of the season, things are just as muddy as they were weeks ago. If these rankings were done like the Litkenhaus ratings there would likely be a tenth of a point separating teams two through ten....

1.Meade Co(12-2 SAME) - Meade picked up 2 wins at South Oldham(Jeffersontown & Mason Co) before falling in the championship game to host S Oldham. Through the first half of the season, the Waves have 4 players averaging double figures in scoring(Durbin & Hackert 14, Mattingly & Baker 12). The Waves are the clear cut #1 team in the region. Meade hosts Bullitt Cen and travels to John Hardin this week.

2.Breck Co(11-3 UP1) - The Tigers went 6-1 in holiday tournament action, picking up a 3rd place finish in Panama City Beach's Marlin Classic. The Tigers then returned home to get a district win vs Cloverport. Cody Mingus leads the team in scoring at 15ppg while Tyler Haycraft is averaging a double double at 10ppg & 11rpg. Breck travels to Hancock on Tuesday for a big district game.

3.Daviess Co(10-4 DOWN1) - DC had a nice holiday tournament run going 5-2 in the OIT and LaRue Co Christmas tourneys. They dropped a big district matchup with Owensboro Catholic but were without the services of leading scorer Stewart Currie(23ppg/12rpg). While DC has only lost 4 games, 2 have now came inside the 9th district. The Panthers have a 3 game home stand this week, with Greenwood tonight, Mclean tomorrow and a huge district rematch with Apollo on Friday.

4.Owensboro(4-5 SAME) - Owensboro choose to take a light holiday schedule only playing one game last week(a win over Whitefield Academy). The Devils are being led by Jacoby Harris, a junior PG. Coach Drake is also getting a nice contribution from Sophomore Corey Gardner. OHS has a district matchup vs Catholic this Friday.

5.Owensboro Catholic(7-5 SAME) - Catholic had a nice run through the Holiday tournaments, finishing 3-0 in the Ohio County New Years tourney(wins over Edmonson, Carroll and Ohio). They came back home and eeked out a win vs a Daviess County team that didnt have their best player. Catholic may be the most well rounded team outside of Meade. Luke Hayden(14), Cam Obryan(10), Luke Payne(10) & Ray Zuerber(10) are all averaging double figures in the scoring department.

6.Muhlenberg Co(6-7 SAME) - The Mustangs struggled a bit vs better competition outside the area but they are playing much better teams than the schools ranked below. Kerry Stovall knows how to get his team better for tournament time. Noah McElwain leads the charge for Muhlenberg, averaging about 19 points per contest. The Stangs travel to Henderson County Friday night.

7.Apollo(5-8 UP 2) - Using similar logic to rank Apollo, as the Eagles have played a very difficult schedule early on. Some of these games were scheduled when the Eagles were thought to have one of the states top teams. Apollo won 3 games in Russelville last week before falling big to one of the states best teams, Trinity. The Eagles are getting a lot of production from junior guard Zach Hopewell(19ppg). The Eagles travel to Grayson County tomorrow and Daviess County on Friday.

8.Grayson Co(8-4 UP 2) - Grayson has won 6 of its last 7 games, bouncing back nicely from a 3 game losing streak just before Christmas break. They have nice region wins against Cloverport and Muhlenberg and only lost to Breck County by 1 point. Trey Goff is averaging 17ppg for Grayson. The Cougars have big regional matchups this week against Apollo, Edmonson and Owensboro Catholic.

9.Edmonson Co(9-4 DOWN 1) - The Wildcats are a hard team to peg through the first month of the season. They compete well against every regional opponent. They pushed Catholic to the limit last week before losing by 4. They bounced back nicely with wins against Ohio County and an overtime district win vs Whitesville Trinity. Edmonson has games this week vs Monroe County and Grayson County.

10.Hancock Co(6-6 DOWN 3) - The Hornets have shown potential in wins against Apollo and Edmonson but have some very ugly losses on their record as well. Ty Ogle leads the Hornets with 16ppg. The Hornets have a huge district matchup this week vs Breck County.

11.Butler Co(8-4 UP 1) - The Bears had won 5 straight in holiday action to lesser competition before dropping a 2 point decision to Grayson County. Butler is getting huge contributions from Rex Henderson at 18ppg & Baylee Anderson 17ppg. Butler has a big district game looming vs Whitesville Trinity on Friday.

12.Whitesville Trinity(7-6 DOWN 1) - The Raiders dropped a tough overtime district loss to Edmonson County over the weekend but continue to show improvement. They get a chance to bounce back vs Fort Knox on Tuesday and Butler County on Friday.

13.Ohio Co(6-9 SAME) - Coach Sparks group is right on the edge of being a top 10 team in the region. I suspect be the end of the season, they will be. They have played a much tougher schedule than many teams ahead of them in this poll and are getting better because of it. The Eagles have a huge district matchup vs Mclean County on Friday.

14.McLean Co(3-9 SAME) - The Cougars struggles continued in the holiday tournament season, going 1-5. It doesnt get any easier for Mclean as they get Daviess County on Tuesday and Ohio County on Friday.

15.Cloverport(0-10 SAME) - The Aces have grown more competitive as the season goes along. They have 2 winnable games this week in Brown and Cannelton, IN.

Looks like a great list to me! Good work.

Thanks for the info. I like the "trending" after the W-L record.

Thanks. Its very difficult to rank these teams 2-14. They keep beating each other. There were some big region games tonight that turned my head some...

Hancock 53 - Breck Co 51 - Thats a nice win for the Hornets and a tough district loss for Breck. It almost assures these two teams will meet in an elimination game in the first round of the 11th district.

Ohio Co 58 - Russelville 46 - This was a shocker to me. Russellville had won 6 straight games coming in with a 9-2 record. Ohio County is a team to watch. Sparks is really putting his stamp on that program. They have played some pretty good teams very well.

Apollo 59 - Grayson 54 - Nice road win for Apollo. I was curious as to how they would respond after they were dismanted by Trinity on Saturday. Grayson is not an easy place to play.

Ben Moss is back at Apollo and is trying to get eligible to play the 2nd semester. I do not see much of a problem with him doing so, and expect him back pretty soon. He was having a very impressive first half at 22FT Academy and was nominated for the McDonalds All American game. He should bring a lift to the Eagles.
