Best Albums of 2015

Featured Replies

I think it's about that time for one of these threads. I always like these to find some stuff I missed and talk about good music.

So, what are your favorite albums from this year?

This is perhaps my weakest year ever for buying new music. Just haven't had the time to go out and thumb through the stacks.

Ones I've Got

(And for the first year ever, these are all iTunes purchases but one. I'm not proud, but money's been tight and I haven't had much time to shop for vinyl, and my local record store shut down last year.)

• "Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit" by Courtney Barnett — standout of the year

• "Strange Trails" by Lord Huron — just a great record all-around

• "Cincinnati" by FreekBass — my lone CD purchase of 2015, when I saw his outstanding set last week in L'ville

• "The Waterfall" by MMJ — it's good, but it hasn't really wowed me like I'd hoped. Did love the concert and finally getting to see them for the first time.

• "Traveller" by Chris Stapleton — the back end of the album isn't great, but the front end more than makes up for it.

• "Kill The Lights" by Luke Bryan — just kidding. Wanted to see if you were still paying attention.

• "Star Wars" by Wilco — challenging album the way "A Ghost Is Born" was. Rewarding in a similar way, but it's a tougher nut to crack.

• "Something More Than Free" by Jason Isbell — the guy keeps on delivering great stuff. My clear No. 2.

Ones I Want

"Second Hand Heart" by Dwight Yoakam

"Sound And Color" by Alabama Shakes

"Universal Themes" by Sun Kil Moon

"Pageant Material" by Kacey Musgraves

"Water For Your Soul" by Joss Stone — Damian Marley is involved, and I've always had a thing for Joss, so this is intriguing.

"Depression Cherry" by Beach House — haven't heard a bad song off this one.

"HITnRUN phase one/two" by Prince, because it's Prince

"Ones and Sixes" by Low

"25" by Adele

My favorite album this year by far is "Traveller" by Chris Stapleton. My favorite tracks are "Whiskey and You", "Was it 26", "Tennesse Whiskey", "More of You", and "Nobody to Blame".

I was surprised that he actually got nominated for the CMA's that he did and absolutely shocked that he won all three categories. Thank God the voters finally saw past Florida Georgia Line.

Love Randy Rogers. Darn shame that he doesn't get played on the radio.

Those are a few more I'd like.

Isbell, Leon Bridges, and Chris Stapleton put out my three favorites. I'll admit I haven't listened to nearly as much in years past though.

This thread has given me some more options.

This thread has given me some more options.

Leon Bridges is on my "want to hear" list. Also would like to check out new albums by Gary Clark Jr., Kurt Vile, and Sleater-Kinney.

Coming Home - Leon Bridges

Leon Bridges

Leon Bridges is on my "want to hear" list.

Just came across this thread after posting about Leon Bridges in another thread. Really solid album. I bought it on a recommendation without previously having heard anything from him, and was definitely not disappointed.

Left "Drones" by Muse off my list by accident. I thought it was a solid album. Liked both the concept and the tunes.
