Ok guys I just thought about the Clay County-South Laurel game in the regional semi's. South was leading 6-0 going in to the 7th and took Trey Smith out of the game, and put him at first base. Clay came back and cut it to 6-3 before they brought him back in. That would be a save situation, so does he get credited with a win and a save, or just a win??

In the MLB, the answer would be no. One of the conditions in the rules for getting a save is the pitcher cannot be the winning pitcher. I'm not sure what the prep rules are.

The answer would be no. The starting pitcher who has will be accredited the win cannot earn a save -- only a win or loss. It is not possible, even though this situation is fun to play with. The only way a starting pitcher could earn the save is in this situation: He starts the game and comes out either with a tie or leading and while he is not on the mound his team loses the lead. Then when his team recovers the lead, he can come back in the 7th and earn the save. He cannot however get the win and a save -- only one or the other.

It is according to how you view a save. A save is when a pitcher enters the game to save the win for his team and starting (or winning) pitcher. The winning pitcher saves the win for himself. It just doesn't go together as much as just saying he earned the win after re-entering.

If a starter leaves the mound as a pitcher after 5 innings and leads the game 3-2, than moves into another position and is never removed from the game, he can than return to pitcher again in the same game.

 

If this occurred, and the opposing team never tied the game and the score remained 3-2 into the 7th, than the starting pitcher returned to pitch the 7th inning, he would face a minimum of 3 batters and by facing a batter, which could tie the game....the starter would get the win and the starter, would qualify for the save.

 

I have seen pitchers leaver and return later in the same game but don't recall either getting win/save before.
