December 14, 201510 yr Thank You - Pioneer.Pride. I think the place to start is to ask yourself why you want one. A knee-jerk reaction to what happened in San Bernadino, CA is not a good reason to get one, IMO. What is your circumstance. Do you feel threatened in your locale, the places you frequent, etc. Highly unlikely you will ever encounter a terrorist. You will be struck by lightening, first or devoured by a shark (or maybe just nibbled on). Another compelling issue to think about is what is your family's circumstance? Do you have children in the home? Is there someone who could get a hold of the gun without your supervision? Accidents are more likely to occur than a self-defense use of the firearm. Is anyone in your home struggling with depression, mental illness, thoughts of suicide or other issues? These are all risk factors for gun ownership. Please carefully consider these and many other issues before getting a CCW or before you bring a gun into your home. Gun ownership is a huge responsibility and many factors must be considered for your own safety, the safety of those you love, and for the safety of the general public. Doing your due diligence is the place to start before making this decision.
December 14, 201510 yr Bob White Club, Camp Co. game and Fish, Mark's guns would be great places to call and ask. they frequently offer classes.
December 14, 201510 yr Mark's Guns is a great place. Support the local gun shop owner over the large box store type. P.P, there is a lot to know and consider about guns, gun ownership, conceal-carry, etc when making this decision. If you want to educate yourself I suggest going to chuckhawks.com and looking through the free pages in the section on handguns. Lots of good info collected there and available to you. Next, if you are serious about getting a handgun for conceal carry I suggest you start with a .22 cal. gun. Not for conceal carry purposes but for learning to shoot and handle a gun. There is no substitute for time/experience handling and shooting a gun. A .22 will allow you to do this rather cheaply and without developing bad habits from flinching with the recoil of the larger calibers. First become proficient with a .22. Shooting 2-3 thousands rounds through a .22 will teach you a lot about shooting a gun and how to handle it safely. With this experience, you will be better able to choose an appropriate firearm for you for conceal carry--one in an adequate caliber and with the action and features you may prefer. A person who is trained to teach conceal carry can help with this selection. Getting to the point of selecting a conceal carry gun is a later step in this decision. Learn all you can first. I actually hope you decide against it. There are risks involved to you and your family. Don't add this risk to your life unless you really feel that your safety is in jeopardy without it. This is what I would tell a friend.
December 14, 201510 yr Just had a groupon pop up but the KY. course was sold out but there are openings in the Ohio course. Normally $139.00 on sale for $69.00 I do recommend you get your permit and take the course. As Grappler pointed out, make sure you are well versed in the use of the firearm. Just because you sit through a 8 hour class does not make you an expert.
