Class 2A Notebook: Reflections of the Empire State Building

Featured Replies

This past week I had the privilege of taking my wife to New York for our anniversary. She had previously never been to the Big Apple so we set our minds at being tourists. The very first attraction we visited upon arrival was the Empire State Building. We were presented with a "True or False" statement.

True or False: Lightning never strikes the same spot twice

The answer? FALSE! Each year lightning strikes the Empire State Building an average of 10 times.

In perfect harmony with this, we now present the 2A Regional Final Round where lightning definitely struck twice, if not multiple times

REGION 1: Mayfield 24 Owensboro Catholic 14

In a game that was nip and tuck deep into the second half it was the combo of Arnett to Kennemore that proved to be the lightning. Twice the two connected on long TD passes to help the Cards edge away. The Mayfield defense was superb! After allowing an early TD pass to Jonathan Garner, Mayfield held the dangerous Ray Zuberer in check for essentially 3.5 Quarters.

The win marks the 7th Consecutive trip to the Semi-Finals for the Cardinals. It also brings back poetic memories of the last time these two teams met and Mayfield went on to a 24-14 win.

REGION 2: DeSales 37 CAL 18

In the John Candy movie "The Great Outdoors" a critical character is specifically noted because he has been struck by lightning "s-s-s-s-sixty-six times". CAL Head Coach Stefan LeFors is beginning to relate to that character. LeFors has seen his Centurions beat DeSales in the regular season only to see their season end to the Colts for the fourth consecutive year!

Austin Johnson was superb and a key 14 point swing where a CAL kickoff return TD was negated that was immediately followed by a Pick 6 proved too much to overcome. The two time defending 2A Champs will now travel to Mayfield for the game everyone has been waiting for since realignment was announced.

REGION 3: NewCath 41 Lloyd Memorial 0

The First Quarter was a little over halfway through and Lloyd was staring at a 20-0 deficit. This isn't the first time NewCath had overwhelmed an opponent on the scoreboard so early, but it may have been one of the first times that they had did it by scoring three Defensive Touchdowns to open the game. Trent Wrobelski had bookend returns of a Fumble and an Interception that sandwiched a John Harris Pick 6.

For good measure the Breds would add their 4th Defensive TD to set the final margin of 41-0 on an Eric Anderson Pick 6. It was a light night of Offense for the Breds, mainly due to the 4 additional possessions for the Juggernaut Offense to be on the field.

REGION 4: Danville 56 LCA 14

If anyone can relate to the disappointment of Lloyd Memorial it would be the Eagles of LCA. With their season teetering on the edge and trailing 36-0 a the Half, any hopes of a comeback were dashed and subsequently eliminated as the Ads posted three Interception Returns for TD's to open the 3rd Quarter and put the game on ice.

Danville simply dominated this game in all aspects out gaining the Eagles essentially at a 3:1 clip and limiting the explosive Eagles to a meager 113 Total Yards. The entire State of Kentucky has to smile a little seeing one of the prouder programs in the State return to the Semi-Finals for the first time since 2010 and only the second time in 8 years.

Cards 24 - OC 13

For the record, the TD that was called back was on a kickoff. There were actually two different penalties, one at the 20 and the other at about midfield. Both times, the hold/block in the back directly kept Colt players from tackling the runner. He would not have returned that past the 30 without the first penalty, and would have been tackled again at midfield.

That's what they all say..... Just kidding
