Mr. Basketball Question

With Mr. Football being an award that juniors are now eligible for does the same thing hold true for Mr. Basketball?

Not at this time. Mr. Basketball will be given to a Senior and the finalist will be the KABC Regional POY's just as last year. Mr. Basketball is award given by the Louisville (KY) Lions Eye Foundation with rules for eligibility being governed by them. They use the event as a fund raiser and since last year netted a large sum of money (having so many finalist from each region and subsequently selling more tables and tickets to the event), I dont see them changing it any time soon.

In the past the winner was voted on by coaches and media. Last year coaches carried more weight for the first time.

Am I the only person that hates the limitation to only KABC Region POY's?

If you can't win POY in your region, why should you have a chance to win POY for the state?

Both you have good points. The flaw with KABC POY's being finalist is one kid that is deserving could get knocked out of Mr. Basketball contention and recognition just because another player in the region won POY (voted on by the coaches - can be political especially if two rivals have good players). This was circumvented last season in a few regions by having co-POY's.

On the flip side I agree that if you are good enough to win regional POY you should have a shot at state POY. The way Mr. Basketball is done now (IMO) is much better than in the past, but could exclude a deserving candidate should there be two high profile Seniors in the same region.

Nonetheless, the Mr. Basketball banquet is pretty awesome if you ever get a chance to attend. Pricey, but the food and service is great and there are always basketball legends everywhere with plenty of high profile guest speakers. They also give out the Wha-Wha Jones award at the banquet as well!

For the same reason that District Runner-ups can advance to the Regional Tournament and potentially to the State Tournament. The 2 best players in the state may be in the same Region (maybe even the same District or even the same team) but only one of them would be recognized.

Maybe the KABC could allow 1-2 "At-Large" selections by allowing 1-2 regions to announce Co-POY's for certain regions, assuming the talent was within that particular region to justify it. Hey, it would probably bring in another family or two to the event and potentially help with their fund-raising.
