I find the dynamic between religious and political beliefs interesting. As far as this country goes, many voters whose religious beliefs intermingle with their political views tend to apply, in my mind, a selective approach to it by preferring to invoke religion as it comes to same-sex marriage, abortion, contraception education, etc., and not other issues, like poverty, greed, peace, compassion, etc.

 

I think the Pope's message drew a contrast between partisans who claim the mantle of religion in defending their views and a more consistent approach as to how faith and politics might intermingle. The responses I've seen that amount to "see, the Pope is on OUR side!" are indicative of this.
