The tourneys drag until towards the end of June as it is. If you are talking about a region final only, maybe. But I'd think they would need to start the tourney a week earlier to accomodate. I'd be for moving them up a week as it is.

For this to work it would have to go like this. Region would still be a district winner vs. a district loser. Series would have to be played at 4 district winner's sites. Winners of those series would have to play at the region host site. And the season would have to end 2 weeks earlier than usual. Also, rain would have to come into play. It's just not practical. I'd love to see that to happen, but it would just take to long.

 

Now, the state baseball championship game could be played in a 3 game series. It would make it more credible.

I think for this truly to work, districts would have to go to a double elimination format. Winners move on to a four team regional and runner-ups are eliminated. By making districts double elimination, it makes for a more true champion. Four team regional should be double elimination set-up as well. Baseball was not designed to be a one and done sport. It is designed for a series to determine the outcome. The greatest teams in the history of the sport often have had 60-70 losses (MLB). Unlike sports like football, where teams often go undefeated, most baseball teams lose, even the best ones. They just win at a lot higher percentage. One bad hop, one unfortunate bounce and the best team often loses. It would be a much truer test to have all levels of the tournament at least double elimination.

I don't like the three-game series, partly because the rest of the tournament (beyond the district finals) is single-elimination. The KHSAA apparently feels it is necessary to get eight teams to the state tournament and that the team that has the pitching depth to win a three-game series has the depth to win a state title.

 

This would be my suggestion ...

 

Allow the regional runners-up to advance to sectional play, but place them in a different sectional. For example, this year the Region 1 and Region 2 winners meet in a three-game series. Instead, put them in a four-team sectional with the runners-up from Region 3 and Region 4, with each regional champion meeting a runner-up in the first round.

 

Then take the eight sectional winners to the state tournament. It would be possible for two teams from the same region to make it to the state tournament.

If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. The atmosphere at Applebee's is awesome. If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself.

I don't think any of the scenarios above would affect the atmosphere at Applebee's Park. They would only affect how teams get to Applebee's.
