Middlesboro vs. OBI 10 a.m.

Knox Central vs. Whitley County 1 p.m.

 

Clay County vs. Cumberland 4 p.m.

South Laurel vs. Barbourville 7 p.m.

 

 

Should be a good tourney.

Middlesboro definitely has the easiest road to the the second round among the district winners. South, Clay, and Whitley should join them although it wouldn't surprise me to see Knox Central or Cumberland there.

Tough draw for Clay County. There going to have to beat South sometime, might as well do it in the semi's. They can't overlook Cumberland either because they are a really good team.

Can we vote OBI off the island for back-dooring their way in via dumb luck, and instead have BellCo, Corbin, North Laurel, Williamsburg do a four-team pod for the right to play M'boro?

I think your under-estamating OBI. During the All A regional Middlesboro beat them 8-6 in 8 innings. I think it was on a walk off home-run. Oneida is not bad when Kendricks is on the mound, and he has his stuff. Give these guys respect. They have been very competive this year. They might have been lucky in the draw, but they deserve to be here. One more thing that probably hurt OBI this week was that there normal starting CF and lead off man didn't return from the small break the coach gave them. Good luck Mountaineers!!!

My intention is not to disrespect them or anybody else, but rather to shame these schools all across the state into abandoning their "dumb luck" votes. OBI is just the most nearby example of the larger problem of a team back-dooring their way into the region.

So who will we see on the mound for these teams and how big a role will pitching play in these games?

Could the same pitcher pitch 2 games in the tournament?? Freshman Nick Gray is going to have to pitch like he has been, and Brandon Mobley is going to have to step up if the Tigers have a chance to win.

If I read the rules correctly, theoretically Burchell could pitch White for two innings and get a lead against Cumberland and bring in someone else and hope that the reliever holds them off, so that he has White available for SL (assuming they win their game). But White would not be available for a region final. Pretty risky strategy, and I think Burchell is smarter than that.

 

I'd feel better about not playing it the Phil Grundy way and putting my top guy out there in the first game, because you know Cumberland (or anyone else, for that matter) will throw their top guy in the first round of the region, then try their luck in the impending second-round slugfest and hope for the best after that.

Region tournament rule of thumb: If you have three quality pitchers you can (theoretically) save your best because you have another for relief that first game (then one, or both of them can return for the championship). If you only have two, you go with your best in the opener if you have any doubts...

The only thing about the second theory is that South won't pitch Smith first game. So if you use White against Cumberland your going to have to hope that a freshman gets the big win for you. I don't know if Gray is ready for that or not. All I know is that Burchell has got a lot to think about. He also has the option were he could go with Mobley. Mobley hasn't been that good this year, but in years past he has been pretty good.
