There are certainly some small schools that regularly field good teams, no doubt about that. In general, with the exception of St. Henry, on the boys side in N. Ky. the small schools are just not that competitive. Some of the large schools are not either (Holmes) but most of them put pretty good teams on the field.

Ok Mustang......let him have it !

I think there might be another school located in Newport that might chime in on this as well.... Maybe groinpull is just seeing who is reading this thread.

I don't put NCC in the small school classification really..........they are 2A aren't they?

Other than St. Henry, how many small schools have advanced to the final four in soccer from N. Ky? I really don't know but I don't think anyone has but I'm not sure.

Good point, I made the mistake of thinking in terms of the (All "A"), which might not always line up with the classes used for the other kinda futbol.

You also have to think on relative terms as well. Does it really make that much difference comparing a 1 vs a 2A school when talking about their numbers compared to a 6A? They are still small. If you look state wide there have been a couple dark horse small schools shake up the soccer world I'm sure.

Again totally disagree, at least when the two teams are at such a disparity as say a CCH Vs Cov Latin.

The weaker team gets nothing out of it, they are so dominated the game is played entirely in their defensive third, likely 30+ shots against to zero for, no possession, etc, etc.

The stronger team gets nothing out of it, they are so dominate the game is played entirely in their offensive third, likely 30+ shots on goal to zero against. Even the bottom 11 players on the stronger team's roster dominate. The stronger team's third string defenders do nothing all game, the fourth keeper never touches the ball, etc. The coach gets to see nothing, it is so skewed, seeing how the bottom 11 players play against far inferior opponents tells the coach nothing about how these players will play against even decent opponents.

Both teams would be way better off holding an intersquad scrimmage.

We'll have to agree to disagree but I think you are looking at this in a way to competitive manner. This is a game and should be fun. No offense but some of the most memorable moments I had while player were low pressure games where I could talk with the opponents at a dead ball and rehash non soccer related things. If it is done right everyone should walk away from these contests having gained something.

To put in perspective, if it were legal, do you think cov Cath would turn down the opportunity to play against Barcelona? Heck no, they would get hammered but the experience would be useful and fun.

OTB don't think I am comparing Cov Cath to Barca either. Lol.

I will try to throw some realism at this...

First, and foremost, Cooper is by no means a soccer juggernaut and Calvary Christian is far from "Chopped Liver". Calvary had a few kids that impressed me last night and I think they could crack several starting line-ups in NKY, I also feel that both teams got something out of the match up.

Cooper jumped out to an early lead and started subbing much earlier than normal. Some starters, who tend to play the entire match, got a fraction of those minutes last night. I would estimate that a little over half of the match was played fairly evenly, I cannot say if the Calvary rotation was any different than normal but I saw starters that played a large portion of the match. Once Cooper started subbing, things evened out fairly quickly and the run of play was much more balanced.

In a nutshell, I think that Cooper got their reserves some needed minutes that could pay off later if some of the regulars are forced to miss some matches down the road. It is also possible that some of them were able to showcase what they can do if called upon. In terms of Calvary, I would think last night provided them with some stiffer competition than they had seen in their first few matches, hopefully helping them prepare for District play.

My comments had nothing to do with the game played between Cooper and Calvary Christian. The comments were only in response to the quote from bothways,

" I think it is beneficial for all to play any school you can in soccer, for various, sometimes unquantifiable, reasons."

It sounds like the game between Cooper and Calvary was one in which both teams did get something out of it. But in a limited game schedule I still feel strongly there are games such as a CCH Vs Cov Latin where there is NOTHING to be gained from playing it, and it is a total waste of time for both teams.

Barcelona keeps turning down our challenges.....cowards ! I guess we will have to settle and play Manchester United.....and then someone will begin a thread about CCH lowering themselves to play them.....oh well, sometimes you have to give until it hurts.

Did Cooper play starters long? Snow? GK still out from highlands?

Gotcha, I do not disagree with your comments as they relate to CCH.

I am also not advocating that Cooper and Calvary continue to play each year. I think the home/home agreement was made a couple of years ago and both schools are honoring the commitment and are making the best of it.

No, starters were not played long, a few of them were out by halftime and did not return to the match in the second half. Since the Varsity played first, I think there were only 19 kids dressed for the match last night, because of this, they were not able to pull every starter. Once all of the subs were in the match, a couple of the starting defenders took turns rotating in and out along the back line during the second half.

The starting GK is still out.
