Bluegrasspresps' Football Rankings 8-24-15

Off and running, and week 1 is here!

In 1A, the biggest change is Frankfort slipping from #6 to #1 0 after losing to Paris on Saturday. Will QB Anthony Robinson out with an injury, will Frankfort be able to stay in the Top 10? But questions are arising after #2 Raceland allowed two kickoff returns for touch downs. Are the Rams just shaking off the cobwebs? Or are Special Teams an Achilles heel for Raceland? Pikeville remains #5 this week, despite beating 2A Prestonsburg 43-6. Should Pikeville be ranked higher? Hard to justify when both #3 Paintsville and #4 Russellville beat 3A teams just as convincingly.

In 2A, Owensboro Catholic leapfrogs Christian Academy-Louisville and Newport Central Catholic by virtue of trouncing Louisville Holy Cross in week 0. Both Mayfield and DeSales are solid at 1-2 after winning their season openers by large margins. Shelby Valley drops out of the top 10 and Somerset jumps in. The real question is, will Somerset be able to stay in the top 10? There seems to be a tightly contested bunching of teams right outside the top 10.

In 3A, just a little shuffling this week, as Paducah Tilghman moves from #5 to #4 , and Central drops from #3 to #5 . Garrard County drops out of the top 10 this week, replaced by Elizabethtown. The biggest question in 3A right now is what to think of Central, who lost to Manual by 2 touchdowns in their season opener. Some also think Paducah Tilghman is better than #4 . But can anyone argue the case that they’re better than Boyle County, Lexington Catholic and Belfry this year?

4A is a real dance at this point in the season. John Hardin, last week’s #2 lost in a huge way to last week’s #3 South Warren. As a result, John Hardin shuffles on down to the #5 spot this week, opening up the #3 spot for Ashland to overtake. Collins manages to beat 5A Montgomery County, but slips this week to #1 0 . Same top 10, different order. Is 4A primed for some teams who are just on the outside of the top 10 to sneak in in the next couple of weeks?

5A rankings this week are yet another shuffle. Maybe the biggest surprise is that Dixie Heights drops right out of the top 10 without even having played a game yet. Entering is Fern Creek. Highlands, who began the preseason ranked #1 in their new class now finds themselves slipping to #3 as a result of very, very strong performances by both Bowling Green and Pulaski County. Will Highlands find themselves outside the top 3 for long? This has to be uncharted territory for the Bluebirds.

In 6A, there are no changes till you get to the #8 position. McCracken County and Central Hardin both drop out of the top 10. Ballard moves up to #8 and cooper and Bryan Station enter the top 10. The top 7 teams with games in week 0 all had strong performance, and it’s too early to tell. It’s going to be really tough to break into that top 7 for teams just outside. One standout question: The #1 and #2 spots should be interesting to watch. #2 Trinity shut out Ensworth (TN), a first after having lost the previous 2 contests. Male remains #1 after shutting out Floyd Central (IN). Is the real battle in 6A the 1-2 spots? Will St. Xavier stay middle of the pack after playing their first game of the season this week?

Looks good! Will Pulaski jump to #1 in 5A regardless of a win by BG if they beat 6A #3 Scott County on the road? Jeffersonville was better than Monroe and Scott County is better than Christian County.

Great question, if Pulaski County beats Scott County, there will be a lot of discussion about who should be number one.

What are you thoughts, both teams win, Pulaski moves to number one?

If BG blows Christian County out of the water I would understand them remaining #1 . However if it's close and PC pulls out the big win on the road, it's hard to go against them based on strength of schedule for the first 2 games. By the end of the year, I could see any of your top 6 taking the trophy.

On another note, John Hardin. A lot of buzz around them preseason. Similar to Highlands for me. They took a HUGE loss. Unless there are some big adjustments, I don't see them making the strides needed to even make the 4A title game like some (should I say most?) predicted. Where I think Highlands will recover, it's hard for me seeing JH recovering from that blowout.
