How has Javelin gone this year?

Featured Replies

Since this is the first year for Javelin in High School, How has it gone so far, and what schools have participated? Any distance to report?

The only complaint that I can see about Javelin is that most schools use the disc pit for the javelin. That puts the javelin at the very end of the meet and at some meets after almost all of the running events are done. In fact, one meet they were handing out awards while the javelin was still competing.

I have been to about 6 meets this year and nobody has thrown javelin. Don't you run a cetrtain distance before throwing javelin? I don't see how you could do that using the disc pits considering they are enclosed by fencing.

I like the reasoning behind it...giving KY HS students an opportunity to be scouted for Javelin by college coaches...but the throwing techniques for the TURBOJAV and the JAVELIN don't convert very well in my opinion.

We had some real Javelins at our school and worked with them to practice for the TurboJav, but got poor results with the Turbo in meets by using techniques we were successful with in practice. The nose of the TurboJav is MUCH heavier than the real thing, and pulls the Turbo down FAST and shortens your throw if you don't throw it UP at at fairly steep angle. With a Real Javelin if you throw it up at a steep angle, it turns the nose up and will even flip it over barely going any where. After a few bad throws we ditched the PROPER throwing technique and pretty much just heaved the thing as straight as possible and did a lot better.

I'm waiting to see how Lamar Latrell does at the state meet. Won't the javelins they use be similar?

No Javelins at the high school level. They did however score it in the Middle school state meet yesterday.

True that you don't throw the javelin from the ring, but most schools do use the same field for the javelin that they use for the discus. So they have to wait until the discus is completed before the javelin can begin.
