Suggestions for feeding my dog

Featured Replies

I hope you can find a solution. This is sad. When my Lucky was sick, scrambled eggs were the way to go for him.

What's weird for me is that it's so hard for me to tell when they're "off their feed". Lucky didn't eat a lot or regularly, no matter how hard I tried to get him on a feeding schedule. Buddy still has issues related to his previous life, so he hides his food or waits till it's dark to eat. He also won't eat out of a separate bowl, so we only have one food bowl for both him and Levi, which makes it hard to tell who's eating how much. Levi eats less since I switched him to Earthborn from Beniful..but he also sheds less and has almost no skin problems, which were terrible issues he had when I took over his care.

A friend of mine started the "Pet Wants" company based in cincy, I'll ask her if she knows what would help or if they have anything available themselves that would give off enough odor to entice the dog to eat it when it's sniffer isn't working so well.

Outside of that I would just try different human foods that have a strong smell. The smell of smoked meats drive dogs nuts and they will scarf it down to the point that they'll try to eat the paper plate I put it on. Unfortunately that's something you would probably have to prepare yourself.

I have a similar situation with my 13 year old chocolate lab. If you know any hunters, ask them if they have any extra, old ground venison. Venison is good for about 1 year, then usually dries severely. It is low in fat and your dog will love it. I will brown several pounds at a time if I have old grind and feed it through the week. Most guys I know that hunt have some old deer in the freezer they will part with rather than throw out.
