The pairings aren't really the problem, it's just distribution on either side of the bracket. The way they've done it is the most objective way to do it, but it can result in unfair seeding given the randomness of it.

That's why they play the games.......however, the top bracket is LOADED!!!!!! Looks like Murders Row.

I agree wth the best playing the best. The best 2 teams should compete for the state title. That can't happen when they are eliminating one another early on.

The fact that one of the teams in the top quadrant has to go 0-2 is a travesty.

I like a seeding system based on ranking and strength of schedule. It's not perfect, after all, there are always unhappy teams in the NCAA who didn't make it. But we are talking about 16 teams that make it to state and 3 or more days before the tournament is played. How difficult would it be to look at 16 teams rank and schedule? The coaches poll and/or True Rank could be considered by the KHSAA.

 

If the current system is the most objective, it's certainly not fair to the stronger teams in the state the last couple of years, IMO.

I posted my thoughts above. I don't know that there's a practical solution because no one will agree on anything. What we're essentially looking for in the name of fairness is guaranteed protection for the best teams/regions, and there are a lot of people who would not agree to do that.

Not 100% sure it would help but the right way to do it and the most reasonable way to do it would be: the losers from the top would play a loser from the bottom not have two losers from the same side of the bracket playing each other in the second round. Now this could back fire if the teams where even to begin with but that would at least help this year. You could also have the coaches vote and rank the regions before region play began and have 1 play 16, 2 play 15 and so forth, this meaning whatever region was voted as the strongest then they are the 1 seed. Not sure that any of this really works but heck it can't be any worse than what we got now. Anybody got any thoughts on this matter, not that it will help but we can all hope and prey that the khsaa would try something.

I realize that teams change every year with graduation, but an idea would be to seed the regions based upon how they performed the previous year in the state tournament. So, Scott County would be the #1 seed this year because they won last year, etc. I know its not perfect because if Scott County were to be upset in the Regional, another team would get the best seed undeserved, but its a thought.

Can't believe that anyone would suggest that this type of objectivity bracketing would work? Really, rely on the coaches to rate team for seeding? Just the 16 coaches in the tournament or all coaches? The 10th did not finish until Sunday, going to get all the coaches' votes in on Monday for a tournament that starts on Thursday? Most coaches would not have even seen over half of the teams in the tournament and if so, just a time or two.

 

A blind draw per region well in advance is the ONLY way to bracket the tournament. Coaches have a couple of weeks to scout the best teams in the region that they may play if both teams were to make it to the dance. It's too bad that the best teams have to play each other but "at this point what difference does it make". All this "fairness" talk is silliness. Just play the game; the purpose of the tournament is to crown a state champion, not to promote "fairness" from start to finish.

 

Not to mention the complexity of seeding the state tournaments for the other sports as well.

I am definitely not in favor of allowing the coaches to have any input into the seeding of the tournament. Just looking at the way they voted during the season should scare anyone off that. This is just an unfortunate run of 2 straight draws that were ridiculously lopsided. I still expect 2 teams from the top bracket to be there in the end. It's just unfortunate for 4-6 teams up top who won't survive mor than 2-4 games that they didn't get paired up with about 5 or 6 teams in the bottom that they probably would have beaten. When it gets down to the last 8 teams or so, you'd like to see the best of the best still alive, and unfortunately, that's not going to happen this year. Not sure there's any good way to fix it though.

After thinking it over and considering every team plays on Thursday night (either the early game or late game), it may be better to have a coaches meeting about noon and draw the names from a hat instead of drawing a couple of weeks in advance per region. That would reduce a lot of the drama for players, coaches and fans.

What would that solve as far as the issue that's being discussed? What drama? At the end of the day the pairings would still be ridiculously one-sided whether drawn 2 weeks ago or last night.

What issue? You play where you get bracketed; that is the way it has always been and always will be.

 

What drama? The drama is right here, all of those trying to figure out ridiculous ways to "make it fair". It is as fair as it can be by random draw. Talk about making it "not fair" would be considering allowing the coaches to vote to seed the pairings or trying to seed by last year's achievements.

 

At least if they did a same day drawing, it would eliminate two weeks of drama especially the last few days before the games begin. May the best team win.
