June 3, 201511 yr I agree...I am not worried about apocalypse. But I have been in situations where roads were closed for well over a week, and there was no food within walking distance. Fortunately, we were expecting company before the blizzard hit and had lots of extra food which we shared with some neighbors. We kept power, but it just as likely could have been out just as long. Go back to the ice storms in Lex a few years ago...some were without power for weeks. 5,000 watts will get you comfortable. We were out for less than a week. But after a night in the hotel after generators sold out we go one and moved back in. Had the necessities: - Direct TV and TV - Internet - Refrigerator - Table top microwave (hard to hot wire the built in one) - Blower to gas furnace - And most importantly - sump pump Have only used once since the ice storm. Our key thing was the sump pump. No backup at the time and we tapped into neighbor (who go one of the last generators that day) to keep it going till shipment came in. Since then put in water powered backup to sump pump.
