Per Darren Bilberry, KHSAA softball commissioner, there are to be no scrimmages officiated by umpires after the season has started. The season has officially started.

If any coaches contact you requesting that you umpire a scrimmage, the answer is no.

OUCH!

Clarification:If they have not played an officially sanctioned game yet, they can still scrimmage. Once they actually play a game then they can longer scrimmage. So just to clarify, the season does not start in this regard until they actually play a game.

Agreed. Why do this?? Softball and baseball is a season full of adapting. Why go away from the old rule of scrimmage up until the time you've played your first scheduled game. With weather and bball, several teams haven't even been outside yet. I'm sure there is a good reason for it and I'm not bashing KHSAA, just like to understand the reasoning behind it.

That's not what is being communicated. It's in black and white right there in post #1 .

A clarification is the process of correcting a misinterpretation. Post # 3 is a clarification, in Mr. Bilberry's exact words, to correct post #1 .

So basically he is backtracking after getting a ton of emails/phone calls.

I would not call it backtracking. As RCC stated, you could always scrimmage up to your first game. It was a simple misunderstanding; nothing negative to dig at here.

Per the follow up email below; umpires may work scrimmages for teams IF that team has not played an officially sanctioned KHSAA game. So, if coaches ask you to work a scrimmage, you are permitted to do so as long as they have not yet played an official game.

Please try to help these teams out and work their scrimmages; it is all about the kids and they need your services to get prepared for the real games. I apologize for the confusion!!! Thank you.

As for the bolded - truer words have never been spoken. I wish more people looked at it this way.

Forgive me for being late to this sport. After almost a decade of basketball, this is our first year for softball. That said I would also like to understand the why's of this rule.
