Inside 14th Region - Regional Tournament Edition

Featured Replies

The 2014/15 basketball season has came and gone like the a bolt of lightning, as we are now in regional tournaments all across the Bluegrass, let’s take a look at the 14th Region Tournament.

Favorite: Knott County Central (27-2):

For the past 3 years the Patriots have dominated this region, running over everyone who gets in their path. The Patriots come in at 27-2 overall this season but 15-0 against region teams. Since taking over for David Fraley, who led Knott County Central to the KHSAA Sweet 16, BB King is 130-31 overall, 80-11 against region opponents and 44-1 against district opponents. Out of the past 5 years (this will be the 6th year), Knott County Central and Perry County Central have met 3 times in the regional championship game with Knott County Central winning 2/3.

Knott County Central demolished the team they will meet in the first round of the 14th regional tournament, Buckhorn on Thursday night, 72-43 earlier in the season.

Knott County Central will be led by senior guard/Vanderbilt commit Camron Justice who is averaging 24.3 points per game. Big Man Evan Hall also plays a big role for the Patriots, averaging 15 points a game, 9 boards a game and usually has some monster dunks in just about every game.

Unless a team gets blistering hot from the field and Knott has a bad game, Knott County Central shouldn’t have a problem winning this region.

Upset Potential: Perry county Central (21-10):

The Commodores have won 3 straight with wins being over Hazard and Buckhorn. Perry County Central played and lost to the heavy favorite, Knott County Central Patriots 56-41 on their own home floor but never count out the Commodores and star guard Braxton Beverly when it comes region time because they, just like most schools come ready to play and are very much capable of upsetting the Patriots if they meet in the regional championship game.

The Commodores defeated the team they will meet in the first round of the 14th regional tournament, Letcher County Central 73-57 on Wednesday night, earlier in the season

Perry County Central will be led in scoring by star guard Braxton Beverly who averages 25.1 points per game. Other players to watch for the Commodores are; Braxton Whitemore (11.8 PPG), Damon Tobler (11.3 PPG)

Dark Horse: Buckhorn (18-9):

Buckhorn was defeated 72-43 by Knott County Central, the team they will meet in the first round of the 14th regional tournament on Thursday, earlier this season. Come region time, Coach Noble’s Wildcats always come ready to play.

Buckhorn will be led by junior guard, Connor Hoskins who averages 19.5 points a game, 9.4 rebounds a game and shoots 43% from the field. Other players to watch for the Wildcats; Josh Crank (11.6 PPG, 35% from 3), Peyton Cooper (7.6 PPG), Ryan Boggs (10.5 PPG)

Remaining Teams:

Letcher County Central (17-11):

The Cougars will have a tough first round game against a team that beat them 73-57 earlier in the season, Perry County Central. This is Coach Hammonds and his Cougars first appearance in the regional tournament in just 2 years, so he will have his Cougars ready to play.

Letcher County Central will be led by sophomore forward, Torrell Carter who averages 25.5 points a game, shoots 53% from the field. Other players to watch are; Jordan Gregory (36% from 3)

Breathitt County (10-15):

The Bobcats started the season off horribly and only had 2 wins heading into the new year but have since turned things around. Breathitt County split the season series with the team they will meet in the first round of the 14th regional tournament, Powell County, winning and losing both games by 6 points. Breathitt County always comes ready to play come region time because it very well could be their last game of the season.

Luke Chaney will be the guy who leads the Bobcats. Luke averages a double-double a game with 17 and 13. Justin Baker and Ethan Little are two more players to watch for the Bobcats, both averaging 13 points a game.

Estill County (18-9):

The Engineers will meet Wolfe County in the first round of the 14th regional tournament on Thursday night. Estill County defeated Wolfe County 63-57 @ Wolfe County earlier in the season but the last time Powell County held the regional tournament, Wolfe County got the best of the Engineers in a 75-73 victory.

Estill County will be led by Trevor Jones who averages 15.4 points a game. Other players to watch are: Freshmen Guard, Caleb Bonny (14 PPG), 7th grader Joe Benton (3.5 PPG, 41.5% from 3), Michael Bishop (10.1 PPG), Caleb Click (3.3 PPG, Estill’s best defensive player)

Wolfe County (6-20):

The Wolves have taken a step back from past couple of years, winning just 6 games. Wolfe County had a 15 game losing streak before defeated Lee County to snap it. One of those 15 losses was to Estill County, a team the Wolves will meet Thursday night in the first round of the 14th regional tournament. Last time Wolfe and Estill meet with the region being at Powell County, Wolfe County left victorious 75-73.

Bradley Lawson will be the go-to-guy for the Wolves averaging 15.7 points a game and shoots 34.2% from 3. Other players to watch are; Devin Stone (10.8 PPG), Corey Rice (7.8 PPG)

Yes. Typically district winners are the home team in the first round and the top team in the bracket is home team in semifinal and final games.

Heard today that the 14th region tournament is cancelled for tonight and tomorrow night. They've scheduled all 4 first round games for Saturday.
