Does this really measure how good a player is at hitting? I know different regions and district's have stronger or weaker pitching so is the AVERAGE a good way to say if a hitter is good or not. Also hits and errors change from not only teams but also between coaches. What are some other BGP'ers ideas about this?

I think a batter's On Base Percentage is more important than their batting average...a person could be batting .250, but if their OBP is .500 they are still getting on half of the time which is needed in high school baseball. I feel it's much mroe important to get on base and help your team out rather than worrying about hits. Dont get me wrong, batting averages are important but it all depends on where you hit in the lineup IMO. Also if you have a low batting average but not many strikeouts, you are still making contact and depending on where you hit in the lineup, moving runners which is also another important aspect.

 

So IMO i guess it all depends on where you hit in the lineup but a high OBP combined with little to none strikeouts shows a good smart hitter in my eyes.

I agree OBP means more than average. Walks are a big part of high school baseball and getting baserunners on puts pressure on the whole defense, including the pitcher.

Both stats IMO don't mean that much. Batting average doesn't tell you how someone's hitting the ball. You could be stinging it and end up 0 for 4 for the day. You can hit everything off the handle and end up 2 for 3. Who's swinging better?

 

I agree that OBP is a better indicator than batting average but it still doesn't tell you who's swinging the bat well.
