MHERST, Mass. (WHDH) - UMass Amherst will now accept Iranian students into certain science and engineering classes, after claiming federal law was banning them from doing so.

In a statement, the school said it was reversing its decision after consulting with the State Department and outside counsel.

The university originally said it was following a 2012 federal law that blocks Iranian nationals from getting a visa to study in the US if they plan to work in the nuclear or energy fields, which is part of sanctions intended to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Opponents made their opinion known on a Facebook page with more than 3,000 followers.

While the university cites a US visa policy, a state department official tells NBC News, “US Law does not prohibit qualified Iranian nationals coming to the United State for education in science and engineering. Each application is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.”
