Rules Question on a Double Technical

Featured Replies

So I am watching the Valley-CAL freshman game and it is in OT after a Valley player hit a three with 2 seconds left to tie in regulation. There were at least 3 technicals in that quarter. In OT, there was a very unusual play.

CAL is bringing the ball up the court to beat the press and the PG passes to a big man who misses a shot. The PG tries to save the ball from going out of bonds (long rebound) but is pushed out of bounds in the air. The refs call a foul on the Valley player (that pushed the CAL player in the air) and then issue a double technicals on the Valley and CAL player (for jawing at each other after the foul is called). The technical on the CAL player was his 5th foul but CAL was in the double bonus. The refs bring every player behind the half court line like they are shooting technical free throws for the CAL player (on double technicals, I thought there were no free throws). The CAL player misses the first and the refs bring all the players back into the lane (to rebound the 2nd free throw if it is missed). He ended up making the second but there is my question. What if the CAL player misses the free throw? The CAL player was fouled out so what would happen if he got the rebound? I understand the foul on the Valley player (the push) was before the double technicals, but shouldn't the Valley coach choose a shooter? Why would the refs bring the players behind the half court line and then bring them back after the first free throw?

Thanks.

So the Cal player that was pushed, then gets T'd and it was his 5th ?

Yes^

I'm pretty sure if a player got his 5th foul he should of been out of the game and the substitute would have shot the free throws in his place. Not sure if the other team gets to pick the shooter or not. I am sure the fouled out player shouldn't have been in the game to shoot the free throws.

^^Correct^^. To answer the other piece: While ball was live, you had a foul, ball became dead and players jawed, double T's. T was Cal players 5th, he is disqualified and coach has 20 seconds to replace him (by rule) T's offset, you go to Point of Interruption, the free throws. Since Cal was in double bonus.

Not sure about all players but shooter off line on 1st, however ball is live on 2nd, so all players to lane lines. If I had to guess, the officials may have taken the first shot to have a discussion with players about sportsmanship.

Coach has to replace the player who fouled out before the FTs. Whomever the coach brings in shoots 2 FTs.

Bottom 2 blocks of the lane have to be occupied on the first FT by the opponent. Officials should not have brought any players anywhere. It's just a normal FT situation.

Interesting question that I had asked last night during a JV game.

There seems to be something missing in this one.

Like what?

Like what happened somewhere between the double T's and administration of the first free throw. Administration doesn't seem correct, so having not seen what transpired it seems like something may have occurred. That something could have been an error that appears was corrected before administration of the second shot.

I think it was just administered wrong.

I kinda think so too. Everyone was confused but I think the refs just did it wrong.
